    Need advice--Camshaft degree issue (maybe??)

@Blue Ox I am degreeing starting with TDC where my pointer is (coat hanger). What I did was make that positive stop a couple inches down the cylinder to roll the engine each direction, write my numbers down, add them & divide by two. With that result, I would then roll the engine back that...

    Need advice--Camshaft degree issue (maybe??)

I am working on my '69 455 Olds right now, degreeing the camshaft on it. I need your advice on the results. Comp cams advice is "leave it as you have it and run it". The camshaft is supposed to be at 102 degrees and my results are not that. This is for my 76 GMC crew/dually, I will not be drag...

    I can't drive.....fifty fiiive

@SquareRoot You put a 5 speed manual in this baby? I had to look up WTF you were talking about :D The google searched turned up cool stuff. I always thought a manual in my dually build would be sweet, maybe some other year though. I think that would be sweet to hear the 4-bbl's open up then slam...

    New engine break-in method

The comp cams literature said NOT to prime the engine either, even for just their cam I am installing. Earlier engines I have built I did prime them, this 455 will be a first that I don't do that. I am also using the assembly lube on everything. They also stated to fill the oil filter so the...

Cutting down valve guides & reusing head bolts??

I guess it also pays to sometimes read the booklet stuff comes with! Take these new valve springs for instance, I installed all of them like I "thought" I was supposed to until another Hot Rod buddy of mine said "you should take out that inner spring to break in the cam"....so I read through the...

Cutting down valve guides & reusing head bolts??

I wonder what is different dimensionally between those W-30 heads and the C heads I have? Valve sizes, or port sizes, or both?

What have you done to your square lately??

I think they actually do weigh more than her!! These are the big valved C heads they used, man the ports on this thing are big too. The heads however do weigh a LOT!!

What have you done to your square lately??

We (our oldest and I) have been working on the 455 for the truck. Got in my new double roller chain and gears, a friend is going to loan me his degree wheel so I can degree the cam in properly for optimal performance out of it, heads are off, valves are lapped, valve guides cut down, heads...

Cutting down valve guides & reusing head bolts??

Ok, I got some information off of my big block. It is a C style head, and the casting numbers are below. @Blue Ox These casting numbers found just above the center two exhaust ports.....on the left side mine was "394" and above the right port was "548" I also think you are right, the "D"...

Cutting down valve guides & reusing head bolts??

Well guys, check this out! This cutter and arbor worked amazing! Took me about 15 minutes to do all 16 of them, I took my time and ran the cutter slow as recommended by comp cams. What I did not know is this cutter also had another small cutter on it to do a chamfer on the top of the guides. I...

Cutting down valve guides & reusing head bolts??

@HotRodPC would have to answer that one, or another Olds expert! My dad has another 455 Olds in his shed, I should see what heads are on that one.....maybe it's the unicorn/legend one :D doubt it though.

Chop the top? Or don’t, that is the question...

That is fricken horrible looking (my opinion). Never would I do that with a truck like that. Now a late 20's Ford truck that is chopped like that and channeled over the frame looks pretty killer. That yellow truck is about as appealing as Tim Tool Man Taylor's smashed top 55.....

Look how easy it is to build a aluminum dual fan shroud. Never buy 1 again $$$$

Flex fans are pieces of shit. @Nasty-LSX your dam lucky it only wrecked stuff you can easily replace, as much as it sucks. Like @BigDaddy72 mentioned, it could have been so much worse. I wanted a flex fan on my fresh built 350 Olds Rocket that I put into my restored '80 Olds Delta88...

Cutting down valve guides & reusing head bolts??

Yup, had it here just sitting around taking up space, might as well use it! On the previous page I have it running in that video of my 51 Ford. LOVE the 68 Oldsmobiles!!!! Some year in hopes to get a 68 442. Damned near had one, but before the guy moved he sold it....it ran, drove, some rust...

Oh man, I am sorry to hear that, condolences. I just turned 40 myself :D Do what makes it look good for you and something you will like to see! Opinions are like 350 Chevy's, everyone has got one :Big Laugh:

Chop the top? Or don’t, that is the question...

So your dad gave you this truck, is there any sentimental attachment to the truck being it was your dads? If there is, maybe keep her slammed and do it up how he had it. Then find another one & go to town on it! Have you asked him about this idea, what are his reactions? If there is nothing...

APB - Check your cowl seam seals!

I like that! That should last a good long time. When I get to that point on mine I will get all cleaned up really good and I plan on using the OSI quad max silicone in the same fashion you did with this to help keep that seam sealed up. The OSI stretches up to 25% and the adhesion of this...

Just purchased a 76 gmc crew dually- it needs help

So is the Sierra Grande a lower trim level than the Classic? @Goggles Pisano Did you buy the truck like that, or did you end up lowering it? Very cool looking truck, looks like it doesn't have any rust either! What are your plans for this truck? Here is the current state of my 76 GMC, plan...

Cutting down valve guides & reusing head bolts??

I had thought of doing a bit of a sleeper at first, but then said screw it, I want to make noise! Gotta love that emissions somg crap..... I bought the truck with no engine in it, and I had this 455 sitting in my garage from another vehicle (my 51 Ford truck) so I decided why not have the...

Cutting down valve guides & reusing head bolts??

I agree, nothing wrong with it! I sent those same pictures to my dad and he said the same too, looks fine, run them! Upon first quick glance too the head bolts look nice, I did NOT inspect them much, was just pulling them and looking at them as they went into the bag! I use ziploc & other bags...

Cutting down valve guides & reusing head bolts??

@HotRodPC @Ricko1966 Here are a few pics of the heads, just got them off tonight. They look pretty damned nice! Valves and seats after removing them have that nice sealed ring around them, not tons of play in the stems. Our oldest (10 yrs old) came out and said "daddy I want to help" :cool...
