Correct Driveshaft Length for 700-R4/NP208/14bolt FF

There are some M1008 driveshafts currently on eBay. I'm considering buying one of those instead of the conversion U-joint. That'd avoid some of the future mess. Now I just need to make up my mind...

Correct Driveshaft Length for 700-R4/NP208/14bolt FF

@bucket, thanks for the chart. I now see what I've been calling 1310 U-joints are not 1310s. My K10 shaft has the inside snap rings, so this chart will certainly come in handy. Thank you.

Correct Driveshaft Length for 700-R4/NP208/14bolt FF

I have a buddy preparing to part out a square plow truck with a huge hole in the frame, and a couple previous frame patches. I checked the driveshafts in that truck yesterday evening, and the other truck he's going to move the plow to. Both driveshafts were like yours, Frankenchevy, with...

Correct Driveshaft Length for 700-R4/NP208/14bolt FF

After calling one shop, they quoted me $240 - $280 JUST IN LABOR to cut, shorten/lengthen, and balance a driveshaft. No U-joints, no slip yoke, and no new tube itself. Sounds ridiculous to me... I'll keep calling around, and looking for an M1008 driveshaft as well. I'm really thinking that a...

Correct Driveshaft Length for 700-R4/NP208/14bolt FF

Thanks for the part number. My K10 driveshaft is from a 10 bolt truck, so that should be the U joint I need. I'll try to order one up tonight.

Correct Driveshaft Length for 700-R4/NP208/14bolt FF

Conversion U-joint!!! Why didn't I think of that... I have a spare 54.25" K10 drive shaft that's 1.5" longer than my K20 drive shaft, which is 52.75". I still think it's shorter than what my K20 needs, but that may be my solution. At least a temporary solution until I can source the pieces to...

Correct Driveshaft Length for 700-R4/NP208/14bolt FF

I do believe the rear springs to be good. I know there are no broken leafs (or leaves, lol), and the truck sits level from side to side. The leaf springs have a similar amount of rust as the frame rails, so I would assume that they've never been off the truck but that could be incorrect. The...

Correct Driveshaft Length for 700-R4/NP208/14bolt FF

Thanks for offering, bucket, but the 5" of lift and 'burbon wheelbase is enough to complicate the comparison beyond my expertise. If the 208 was never paired with a 14bFF from the factory, which I have no knowledge of, that may explain my inability to find a proper length driveshaft.

Correct Driveshaft Length for 700-R4/NP208/14bolt FF

AuroraGirl, please do measure your driveshaft for me. U joint to U joint if possible. I don't think the sm465 is the same length as the the 700-R4, but bucket claims all factory trans and 208 combos are the same length. If that's the case, your driveshaft should be the length I need. I have...

Correct Driveshaft Length for 700-R4/NP208/14bolt FF

FWIW, I'm still looking for a driveshaft measurement from anyone running a 700-R4/NP208/14bFF in a K20 with an 8' bed. I have two more potential leads as of this week, one in New York and one in southern MN. If those fall through, I'll likely be having a new driveshaft made.

Correct Driveshaft Length for 700-R4/NP208/14bolt FF

^ Right! Transfer case position is only dependent on the length of the transmission. The variety of transmissions used in these trucks created a need for different length driveshafts. Hence, this thread and my quest for a longer driveshaft. I'll have to look at my transmission crossmember...

Correct Driveshaft Length for 700-R4/NP208/14bolt FF

AuroraGirl, does that driveshaft fit nice and tight in the transfercase? Or is there some slop? The driveshaft in your picture looks similar to mine. At least the length of yoke showing out of the transfer case. My K20 came from NW Wisconsin. Maybe all Wisconsin trucks are like this ;)

Thanks for the wisdom, bucket. I have to make some phone calls this week.

Correct Driveshaft Length for 700-R4/NP208/14bolt FF

Does anyone have a link for the "proper" way to measure driveshaft length? I've heard too many different methods, so I'm looking for a source of truth. I haven't been able to find a driveshaft locally on Craigslist or Marketplace, so I'm getting ready to have one built. Can't post in this...

Correct Driveshaft Length for 700-R4/NP208/14bolt FF

What's the correct length driveshaft between a 700-R4/NP208 and a 14 bolt FF with an 8' bed? Is anybody running this combo and willing to measure u-joint to u-joint for me? "Frank", my '81 K20, was Frankensteined by the previous owner. As a result, many things aren't quite right. Now I'm...

Since you asked, here's the Camaro. I also have a '75 Monte Carlo. I'll couldn't find a good pic of it though, so I'll have to take a new one later today. I love my SBC powered Chevys and wouldn't dream of driving anything else. Lot's of people (or most people) don't get it, but I'm sure...

Hello everyone, I've been lurking around here for years, and decided now it's time to join. I spend some time on NastyZ28 since I have a '79 Camaro and got into that before the square bodies. I had an '84 K10, but that's been gone for 6 or 7 years now. I currently have an '85 K10 and a...
