    '85 C30 - Reg.Cab - 8" Bed - 2WD

8-inch bed? Shortest ever! I'd say it's extremely rare. :anitoof: In all seriousness, I'm not sure about the rarity. I will say, anecdotally, that most of the C30s I have run across on the interwebs were dually C&C set-ups.

Borgeson & Red Head are always mentioned. Has anyone tried/used the Detroit Speed steering box?

Energy Suspension body mount bushings feedback (P/N 34116G)

I just installed Energy Suspension body/cab/radiator core support bushings on my '85 Square Body project. Because I had to browse through dozens of threads before buying, most of which weren't first-hand purchase/installation experience, I thought I'd post some info here for future member...

14-bolt FF aftermarket diff cover replacement

They should certainly be compatible with the OEM diff cover. It was about 4x the price of a standard gasket, but still only ~$25 IIRC, so a minimal investment. They're also supposed to be reusable...not a big deal for me, but worth mentioning. Craig

305 SBC vs 6.2 Detroit: Which would you rather?

Very cool. I love creative fuel source ideas. When I was still doing it, people were looking into algae, used coffee grounds, etc. as sources for oil. It was possible, but the yield was so low that it wasn't practical. BTW, I didn't necessarily think you were critiquing my experience; I just...

14-bolt FF aftermarket diff cover replacement

Rather than post in the almost-1300-post "What did you do to your square lately??" thread, I thought I'd post my experience with a Yukon HD diff cover and LubeLocker gasket install on my '86 M1008/K30. All fluids on the truck were changed by the previous owner of my truck - and verified...

305 SBC vs 6.2 Detroit: Which would you rather?

I agree 100%, and am definitely of the same "preparedness mindset". My intended point was that you don't just "whip up biodiesel" in a pinch. Any multi-fuel-capable engine is a great thing, though. Side note: My CUCV is also fairly EMP-resilient, and we have EMP protection on my wife's...

305 SBC vs 6.2 Detroit: Which would you rather?

Unless you're making your own biodiesel fuel, which is a fairly involved process and requires a lot of up-front $$$ for equipment, it really isn't a notable reason to consider the 6.2L. I get that it sounds good "on paper", though. I used to make my own bio, so I have hands-on experience with...

    Hood release cable

I have an '85 M1028 & '86 M1008, and replaced the hood latch on both of them. I initially bought a Dorman hood release cable from my local O'Reillys, but the firewall was completely different, and I was absolutely unimpressed with Dorman stuff in-general. I ended up buying two (2) new cables...

305 SBC vs 6.2 Detroit: Which would you rather?

I own an '86 M1008 with the 6.2L diesel (35K miles), and an '85 M1028/C-10 project truck that'll be getting a 305. The 6.2 is a dog, but I don't mind that. For me, the truck is primarily used as an around-town truck (30-50 mph speed limits) and somewhat of a beater farm truck. I'm...

Bed mounting hardware question (specific to '85-'86-ish 1/2-ton Fleetside long bed models)

I just received a bed/frame mount hardware kit from LMC (P/N 30-0120). I added a diagram from LMC's site, and also photo that looks similar to what I received (photo courtesy of Brothers Trucks). My question is regarding the two (2) longer bolts, which are 10 1/2" long. I'm installing a...

    M1009 Engine Swap ID

You'll want to sign up on SteelSoldiers.com, if you're not already. There are a lot of CUCV owners there (myself included). If it's a stock engine, it will be the 6.2L diesel.

Are 2WD & 4WD front frame horns/bumper brackets the same?

My daily driver/farm truck is a 4WD M1008. Haven't had to use 4WD yet, other than checking that it worked when I bought the truck. I already have a rebuilt 2WD drivetrain for the second CUCV, and as you can see from the photo, it's stripped to the bone. For an around-town, open-door...

Are 2WD & 4WD front frame horns/bumper brackets the same?

I have a couple CUCVs, one of which is a stripped-down '85 M1028 (K30). Despite the surface rust on the hood & fenders, the body & frame are still very clean (black paint on the underside of the body, and very little surface rust on the frame). I'll be building out this truck as a super...

    K20 Wheel/Tire Confirmation

It sounds like you may already be set, but I thought I'd mention that I have H2 wheels with Nitto 255-80R/17s on my '86 M1008 (K30). The H2 wheels have a lot of backspacing, which caused drag link joint clearance issues with the wider tires that were on the truck when I got it (at full lock to...

    Anybody try Poppy Patina?

Yes, sir. I've had a couple military Jeep CJ-10as and a military trailer, so I'm familiar with the CARC paint. Thanks for the safety warning...well-justified!
