    Oil pressure gauge.

The easiest way to test it is with the instrument cluster opened up (but still connected), make sure the three posts on the gauge are making contact, then grounding and open circuiting the wire at the sending unit. Sending units are the most likely failure point. I've only smacked an instrument...

Hold up! Don't you own a Furd pickup, too? *laughing*

I'm actually just old enough to remember leaded fuel.

That pretty much dismisses the notion of a plugged up cat. I drove a Ford Aerostar (stop laughing) with melted down converters once, and it would actually lose speed if you kicked it into passing gear. Basically anything that increased flow through the exhaust (rpm, opening throttle) would make...

Opinions on cutting out catalytic converters.

It was based on GVW. To oversimplify, 1/2 tons got converters in 1975, while 3/4 ton up did not. They tightened it up in 1979, so most of the Heavy Half/Big 10 packages that pushed a 1/2 ton into 3/4 ton territory, no longer could meet emissions without a catalyst. As was stated, most GM...

Engaging 4x4 in 84 High Sierra

The 208 can be shifted into 4H at up to 25mph with automatic hubs, though mine is happier if I shift it at lower speeds (I usually shoot for about 5mph if possible, as it's sometimes easier when you're rolling slightly than stopped completely). Of course once your hubs are locked in, you can...

Opinions on cutting out catalytic converters.

@AyWoSch Motors -You can usually tell if you have a cat melted down by listening to the exhaust... It will make a weak, hissing sound when you step on the gas under load, and you'll have less and less power the more you put your foot into it. I used to have a 1991 GMT400 3/4 ton 4wd that was a...

Thoughts on going to a 4spd overdrive?

I'm detecting a weakness. I think you have a repressed soft spot for the 700R4 after all. You can admit it...

Opinions on cutting out catalytic converters.

If you stick your paper clip in (geez. that didn't sound right) after the engine is running, it will flash the CEL to indicate the state of the O2 sensor. I think on is rich and off is lean. It can cycle faster than 2.5 times per second. Wasn't aware of a way to get it to tell you whether you're...

Opinions on cutting out catalytic converters.

Yes. I'm rather fond of the GM OBD1 system... being able to retrieve fault codes and oxygen sensor activity with a paperclip in a pinch, absolutely rocks. And not so much (or at all) on Ford's EEC's. Eek.

Opinions on cutting out catalytic converters.

Didn't know they went that late... living and learning. And yep. My 1995 Firechicken had "OBD1.5", with the OBD2 connector already in place, and some functions already updated to the new standard.

Opinions on cutting out catalytic converters.

I have a 1995 Airstream motorhome on a Ford chassis that has no catalyst. I'm pretty sure that had to be the absolute last year any gasoline fueled vehicle came without in the US, as they switched to OBD2 for 1996.

Low oil pressure and rough idle

I imaging you can rent one... I've always just *had* an old Stewart Warner gauge with a short length of hose on it, so I've never shopped for one. The oil pressure port for the factory gauge is just to the left (driver's side) of the distributor. It you've got the stock gauge, it'll be...

Low oil pressure and rough idle

I usually test them against a known good mechanical gauge. Depending on operating conditions, oil temperature and viscosity, oil pressure can vary quite a bit... and your pressure doesn't sound terribly low to me... though it'd be good to know more details of when you're seeing these numbers...

What have you done to your square lately??

Looking at the cargo light I installed about a month ago, and reading some other observations, told me that I could now expect water leaks in the back of the cab... I'm guessing mostly due to this seam that the crummy rubber pad leaves wide open. I decided to fill it with some RTV to see if that...

    Can't get shit for supplies!

It'd be swell if the stuff was actually being sourced from this country (i.e. not sitting on a boat from China), but that ship has already sailed. Complete fʊckery.

What have you done to your square lately??

I was actually wondering if tower clamps would've been used on my 1986 originally.

    Tail light help !!!

I've always used the solder and shrink tube (always avoided the sh¡tty RoHS solder, though), but have been looking at better quality crimp terminations lately... There's a huge difference between what you can readily pick up at an auto parts store, and what's used in industry- especially...

What have you done to your square lately??

I was wondering how long GM used those tower clamps... and I see that they made at least 1980. My 1986 has the usual gear clamps, and I think? that might be what it came with?

Blower fan will not blow when heat is switched to defrost.

All of the older GM vehicles I've had have engaged the A/C compressor with defrost (whether you want it or not), though it won't kick on if the outside temperature is lower than about 40 degrees. A/C does dehumidify the air, so does help quite a bit with defogging windows when it's damp outside...

Blower fan will not blow when heat is switched to defrost.

The only time I remember this happening was on a control that automatically set the fan to high speed when you selected defrost, and the high speed fan relay was bad... but this ain't it, as you have high speed in other positions. Mebbe call an exorcist? ...unless it's using a different relay...

    Tail light help !!!

Just sift through it methodically, and everything will come together fine. If it seems a bit overwhelming, just start with the brake/turn signals- each one only needs a hot and a ground, and each wire only feeds one bulb. Same for reverse lights, except there's two bulbs. Once you have those...
