    Headlight switch dimmer question

The rheostat is on the hot side of the circuit, so the dash lights will remain grounded if the rheostat fails; they just wont receive power. The dome/courtesy circuit is the only lighting that uses ground to complete the circuits (dome and courtesy light are both on different circuits. The...

It's the wired receptacle that you twist the turn signal bulb into.

    Mechanical fuel pump beef/info rant

Thanks for the heads up. I'm pretty aware of the Airtex name from dealing with an old Carter mechanical pump on my 1962 Studebaker. The Airtex name means "pure sh¡t" for those too, with some of the pump arms not even being shaped right... so they won't make contact with the camshaft eccentric...

What have you done to your square lately??

That looks great! I tend to do the same thing. My 208 transfer case was stuck together with a shitload of black schmoo, as well.

    Need a turn signal socket

I usually search out undamaged sockets from older GM vehicles at the wrecking yard. They used a number of different styles, but it's fairly easy to tell them apart.

Brass Synchro Ring in Transfer Case

I could maybe see one for manual hubs not using the synchro ring, as it was only used to bring the front driveline and diff up to speed when shifting a truck with auto-lock hubs into 4wd from an unlocked state. That feature would be totally unused with manual locking hubs.

    Oil Pressure Gauge

@Raider L If it's requiring at least 10ga wire, that's going to be a full current ammeter (probably 60 amp?), so the whole charging system is going to have to flow through it for the gauge to read correctly. I thought you were dealing with stock gauges. You'll have to make some significant...

Is there such thing as upgrading your starter and should i do it?

I have one of those on my truck, and it's hung in there for the last 18 years or so. Still, I'm sorta wondering why I thought I needed this on a 9.5:1 305... guess priorities and mentality change over the years. I think I'm going to rebuild the stock one (still sitting in the same box I put it...

Kobalt vs dewalt for a sawzall

I definitely have experience with the DeWalt batteries. Have had three that sucked; all were the small 20v 2Ah packs. Seemed to be a problem with the internal charge control circuitry rather than actual bad cells, and DeWalt just sat there and blew raspberries at me. Unfortunately kinda stuck...

Opinions on cutting out catalytic converters.

I've actually never had a problem with yellow (the one size fits everything sh¡t). DexLeak on the other hand... Yeah. How did we go from talking about cadillac converters... to antifeeze? Oh well.

    battery post mystery

Experiment by dissecting a dead battery, eh? From what little I have, the maintenance free ones appear to be put with one-way parts that snap into place, or are sometimes sonic welded. They probably have pressure relief or check valves in the position where conventional filler caps go. I will...

    battery post mystery

I was just doing a preliminary test on the whole pack, lazily, by using the powertrain. I pressed on the accelerator with the front wheels against a curb, putting about 150-200 amps across the pack when it happened. Was facing the batteries with them about three feet away from me. The batteries...

    battery post mystery

I once worked as an electrician for a large commercial complex, but occasionally got called to pinch hit in other areas... Here's something I witnessed once while working on an electric golf cart: Golf cart was randomly cutting out under acceleration, and would sometimes start freewheeling...

4x4 Transfer Case Visor Instruction Labels

Until you get a copy of the sticker... it's very much the same as for the automatic hubs, other than you can omit the don't exceed 25mph when shifting from 2H to 4H; you can shift back and forth at any speed (as long as you're driving in a straight line) once your manual hubs are locked in...

    battery post mystery

Exide is actually their own company, and not affiliated with Johnson Controls to the best of my knowledge. Exide makes paperweights that look like car batteries, and I remember them seemingly making every store brand battery during the 1990's and earlier.

I call BS on wire size!

The last fuel pump I replaced on my 1991 Lumina overheated the wiring in the tank, mostly discoloring the plug that went into the pump. I do question the choice to put 16-18 gauge wiring in the fuel tank... but I've never heard of a vehicle fire related to an in tank pump (unless it's the...

Opinions on cutting out catalytic converters.

I'm at that bridge right now, as the universal cats I installed with my dual exhaust back in 2003 aren't working up to ***** anymore (common issue with cheap universal cats, as they skimp on precious metals). I live near an area with emissions regs, but have always been able to sideskirt having...

    Oil pressure gauge.

I got lucky... It was an older vehicle that used PC168 bulbs... far enough back where they didn't even solder the bulbs in the holder (like our trucks). My Lumina, on the other hand, has a dark heater control panel and 2/3 dark radio; I just haven't felt like breaking out the soldering iron to...
