    Smog Pump

Well sh¡t... I was going to take a few pictures of mine, but I found that it's sitting off center (but still functional) with one bracket shoved against the lower radiator hose and not connected to anything... probably the product of having to quickly replace a water pump while on vacation. Mine...

So Does Everyone HATE This Steering Wheel?

I'm probably a bit weird, but I actually prefer large diameter, thin-rimmed steering wheels. I have the stock 16" wheel in mine (the extra dee-luxe one with the smaller horn button), and it just feels "right"... meaning being able to maneuver in parking lots and tight spaces with one finger if I...

    Seatbelt light remains on

Same. Another instance that comes to mind are alternators that use a warning light instead of a voltmeter/ammeter. The field is energized through the filament of the incandescent bulb, and if the bulb is removed, the alternator won't charge. Sure, you could engineer a circuit that would allow...

    Seatbelt light remains on

Yeah. There's a timer built into the seatbelt buzzard... thermal on the ones that buzz, and electronic on the ones that shriek (later trucks like mine). Either way, the light comes on for 5 or 6 seconds whether you're buckled or not, but the buzzer only grinds your ears if you aren't buckled...

    lamp sockets factory instrument panel

Another option might be to use an ashtray light, which would allow you to direct light in one direction without spraying it all over the floor. The picture I posted was just the first thing that came up when I searched; I think it's for an early Mustang... but the design stayed pretty much the...

    Th400

Ahh... that's why that 1987 shortbox 4x4 I looked at before I bought my '86 had a TH400 in it. It was a TBI 350, and otherwise equipped like most higher optioned mid-1980's Squares... was thinking the trans was a heavy duty option at the time. Looked at a couple of sites with transmission info...

    Studying the schematic

@Raider L Sh¡t! It looks like I was talking Greek to myself, too... I just looked up the diode number, and I assumed correctly there, but a PNP is a transistor (as is NPN). What I should've said is "PN junction diode". I only know enough to poke through simple electronics and sometimes be able...

    Studying the schematic

That's a diode. It functions like a check valve, letting power flow one way, but not the other. It appears to be a (pretty healthy sized) Schottky diode, which tends to be more efficient than a standard PNP diode.

    Studying the schematic

Shunted ammeters, like what the factory installed in 1973-75 trucks, aren't a fire hazard... though I suppose you could get a few pops and a little smoke out of one if you bypassed the factory wiring and fuses. The problem I had with my '75 was that the thing never read more than about 1/8 scale...

    Studying the schematic

I'm gonna be honest and say that I'm not 100% sure. I guessed that that wire with the 20amp fuse goes to the high speed heater blower relay, as that's where mine is. That circuit up there *may* bypass the ammeter? Is that wire feeding the upper terminal block actually the output from your...

700r4 locking up in 2nd also locking too fast. Vac switch?

No. Mine always unlocks and drops back to 3rd a soon as you drop below 45mph, so it never lugs. It does make it a little harder to maintain a dead nuts 45, so I usually just step it up to 50 on those kind of roads. It also does part throttle downshifts without having to be prodded. The only...

700r4 locking up in 2nd also locking too fast. Vac switch?

I'm not 100% sure on the 2nd and 3rd gear speeds, as my speedometer is way off... do know that the 3-4 shift will happen at exactly 45mph if I briefly lift my foot off the gas. The TCC always engages right after the 3-4 shift. But yeah, it only seems to lock in 3rd once you're around 50 mph... I...

700r4 locking up in 2nd also locking too fast. Vac switch?

FWIW- My 1986 will only lock the TCC in 4th gear if there's no vacuum to the switch. That happens right after the 3-4 shift at 45+mph. I'm having some issues with vacuum lines and delay valves, so have had the switch connected directly to manifold vacuum. In that case, the TCC will engage in 3rd...

    Snowblower prep

@AuroraGirl Yep. There's a scraper bar on the bottom of the auger housing. It basically performs the same function as a snow shovel, scraping the snow off the surface you're clearing... those (and the skid shoes) wear a lot faster if you're clearing paved areas. The skid shoes are used to keep...

    Snowblower prep

@AuroraGirl The EPA is the one behind the non-adjustable carburetors. It's not uncommon for four stroke snowblowers to surge a bit at maximum governed speed with no load on the engine (the stock carb jetting is usually a touch lean), but it should even out once you're throwing mud and rocks...

    Snowblower prep

No. You don't need to replace shear pins until they shear. MTD snowblowers have a particularly dainty gear reduction box for the augers, so I'm glad you've got the right shear pins for it... the gearbox will self destruct the next time you get an obstruction that stops the auger if you replace a...

    Headlight, driving lights.

The updates are cool... It's good to find out how things are actually working out in the real world, as a lot of stuff that looks good on paper doesn't perform the same when you actually have to use it out there, or vice versa. @77 K20 I'd like to hear your take on the yellow lenses for your...

    Headlight, driving lights.

@SirRobyn0 That looks pretty fair, best I can tell! I think your frog lights should be aimed so that the top of their hotspot (at 25ft) is about 3 inches below their height on your bumper. You could probably go up to 1 or 1.5 inches below horizontal if you want a little more distance out of...

    Ampmeter connection

Well yeah. I'd be happy if your damn ammeter would work as it's supposed to. Everything sounds pretty normal until the thing pegs itself to the discharge side. It doesn't make sense. You shouldn't have anything drawing enough power to do that? Your voltmeter should be dropping at the same time...

    Ampmeter connection

@Raider L Yep. You are correct that an ammeter will theoretically read the same if wired to the negative side of the system. As it is wired now, everything in your electrical system will pass through the ammeter, except for the starter motor itself (since it draws a few hundred amps and you'd...

    Ampmeter connection

I think you're overthinking this. Don't sweat about hooking up the wires backwards; the only thing that will happen if you do is that the gauge will read backwards. The only real way this circuit will sh¡t on your parade is if one of the wires touches ground, or if you have loose connections...

    Ampmeter connection

@Raider L Usually, you'll see a slight discharge when you turn the key on and crank the engine (the starter motor itself bypasses the ammeter), then you'll see a fairly hefty swing towards "Charge" after the engine starts... which will start tapering back after a few minutes of running/driving...

    Headlight, driving lights.

No. On our trucks, the power for the high blower speed relay bypasses the ignition switch; it's just the trigger wire for that that runs through the ign switch. The three lower blower speeds do run directly through the ignition switch, though. This is only for a truck with A/C... though I...

    Headlight, driving lights.

@SirRobyn0 That's looking good! Those are kicking out a lot more light to the sides than just about any sealed beam (those no longer made GE Nighthawks were the rare exception, probably just equaling these). Hella doesn't make their own bulbs... what they have is pretty good, but probably not...

Authentic restoration correct white wall tires

Ehh... They have their place. It's hard for me to picture 1960's-70's luxo-boats with blackwalls. One thing that has soured me a bit on whitewalls is that just about every older car or truck that's restored gets them, whether they look right on there or not. Most work trucks and stripped, fleet...
