    Help with Calipers

I see this is a 2 year old thread but I too have the same question! I have rebuilt my brakes with the JB7 calipers up front (coming from the JB5) and left the stock drums the same. I am looking at my master cylinder right now and the rancid fluid in it and saying to myself why did I think I...

    Rebuilt $350 long block questions

That was my argument from the beginning with them! How could you possibly not know a block was so severely jacked up that it needed to go from a std bore to .060 over with 2 sleeves before you even started moving it over to the boring machine. And I'm pretty damn sure that wasn't even the...

    Rebuilt $350 long block questions

That is becoming more likely the more pieces I put together on this...I actually thought I took a picture of the block and head casting #'s but can't find them to compare, damn it! Of course the one picture I need I can't find!!

    Rebuilt $350 long block questions

I think you are right that I owe it to other consumers to report it to the regulating authority... which I absolutely hate involving the government in anything... It gets kind of messy asking for all my parts back because essentially they are all sitting on an engine stand in front of me..aside...

    Rebuilt $350 long block questions

Definitely one of those life lessons I learned! I have two theories on what happened, one being I didn't get back what I dropped off.

Thanks K5, Yeah...I think the BAR route is definitely the hammer if this doesn't get resolved via the credit card dispute route...I posted the one and only written invoice I received earlier in the thread..it was 3 or 4 lines...no written estimate. Retrospectively it does seem odd that a BAR...

    Rebuilt $350 long block questions

The block was an 010 casting from 1971.. I didn't take pics of the deck # before drop off but the casting # is the same. You are just as confused as I am..it went from a std bore to .060 over PLUS 2 sleeves..not being a professional machinist I'm not sure how that happens as if you needed to...

    Rebuilt $350 long block questions

I think I just drew the short straw on this one... the shop has been around a while and has overall good ratings on google and yelp... peculiar thing is I just looked at yelp and saw a review posted 3/19/2021 from someone who had a similar experience I did!! I'm wondering if someone new took...

    Rebuilt $350 long block questions

Thanks my man... I really dislike anyone taking advantage of someone for any given reason. I'm one of those guys who doesn't mind paying for a quality product as I suspect almost 99% of the members of this forum are, which I love. However, in this particular case I'm seeing that some shops are...

    Rebuilt $350 long block questions

Hey all, sorry for the late reply... I wasn't getting email notifications on the thread! As of right now I have disputed the charges with the credit card company and they said they are going to mail me something of a questionaire that I need to respond to in the next week or so. I only spoke...

    Cleaning differential

Thanks for the replies! I was wondering the same thing, how a washer would just "appear" in the diff. I'm almost thinking someone was working on the diff and put it in the case to use and forgot about it and went and got another one? And yes Reckless, I have been worried for a while, haha...

    Cleaning differential

Hey All, I went to go change the oil in my differentials today. the front one looked ok except the fluid seemed pretty dark and there was some sludge on the bottom of the pumpkin I scraped out...the rear one actually started draining what looked like normal fluid then it became a thick almost...

    Rebuilt $350 long block questions

I guess that is one way to look at it... and that is the perspective I had walking out paying $800 more than I previously agreed.. But what I REALLY don't like is not being given the information to make a decision especially when someone is going to spend my money. I already had the discussion...

    Rebuilt $350 long block questions

Appreciate it my man. ..and your right, I try to see both sides of things and your absolutely correct that people see that as a weakness and try to take advantage. Funny you bring up the construction analogy because I used to be a project manager for a custom residential builder and I have...

    Rebuilt $350 long block questions

The last time we spoke about it the conversation was stroker at $3600-$3800 vs 350 with upgraded cam at $2400-$2500... I told him do the 350 build. To be honest, I really don't want a .060 over block with 2 sleeves in it regardless of how "fine" he thinks it is. As Bextreme04 said, you get so...

    Rebuilt $350 long block questions

Your probably correct that the Bureau of Automotive Repair in California requires a written repair estimate...they wrote me one at Pep Boys when I had the rear drums turned.. I was thinking about this when I went out to lunch today and ordered a hickory burger...if the waitress brought me back...

    Rebuilt $350 long block questions

I guess I didn't think $3200 was all that bad either...like I mentioned earlier I thought they may have just had to replace some stuff with higher end parts...as far as why they were sleeved, nothing was mentioned about standing water/corrosion/etc he said they needed sleeves because they were...

    Rebuilt $350 long block questions

Thanks for letting me bounce that off you guys...I'm not trying to leave someone high and dry and I just wanted to make sure I was thinking clearly... the other thing that is really starting to piss me off is the dismissive "Yeah, I probably should have called but got caught up" comment..

    Rebuilt $350 long block questions

So now I'm at the point of being completely pissed off as I've spoken with a couple of friends who build race trucks (they live out of the area so I didn't ask them for the machine shop rec) and they said they have NEVER seen an unbored block that would need to go .060 over for out of roundness...

    Rebuilt $350 long block questions

Ok...talked to machine shop and the story was that two cylinders were out of round and he couldn't put two sleeves next to each other, whatever that means.. I reminded him the whole reason I did what I did, in sourcing a new block, was because I didn't want it .060 over as I was already at .030...

    Rebuilt $350 long block questions

Thanks again Q... I agree that you want to feel good about dropping a few grand especially for a quality product that gonna last you many a mile... and as you said, a professional machinist should know, or have a very strong suspicion, a block is going to need a sleeve WELL beforehand...

    Rebuilt $350 long block questions

I appreciate the inside scoop! I actually sourced and purchased the block disassembled because the engine I pulled out was complete toast. The block was in remarkably good shape (to the naked eye anyways) with no ridges...I dropped it off at the shop and after we unloaded everything he grabbed...
