Passing CA Smog help - High HCs

The info I have is that it’s legal in ca on GM v8s prior to 1980. I hope that info is legit. Praying to the truck gods. Hopefully I receive all the parts so I can smog next week. Ready to get the project rolling-legally. Wifey doesn’t want a lawn/driveway ornament.

Passing CA Smog help - High HCs

I was going to go fuel injection but was told I would fail inspection if I didn’t have a carb. Just by a car guy not someone with testing experience

Oh lol- the carb is CA approved. It came with a doc I’m supposed to give the tester.

Passing CA Smog help - High HCs

Why would it need to be carb compliant. Would they even know to look under truck if the doc says not applicable? It doesnt make sense to need a compliant one if it isn’t needed for that model year- it’s just extra

Yeah I swapped out the Qjet for eddy 1400 (working on figuring vacuum lines), replaced pcv valve, plugs and wires changed, replaced the air filter. Next is oil change and fuel additive.

Qjet to Edelbrock 1400 vacuum line puzzle- I need help

I believe the blue to green line in the original diagram I posted above - the vacuum circuit that goes through the control valve, has a function in the choke. Since the Edelbrock has an electric choke, I dont think I need this. Is that correct?

Qjet to Edelbrock 1400 vacuum line puzzle- I need help

Here is the sheet. Circled is measured and Max is the expectation. CO an NO err fine but HC was sky high. The smog guy also disconnected the PCV hose on the side that feeds into the air cleaner. I didnt notice until I got home. I’m sure that had an affect but didn’t think that big of an affect...

Passing CA Smog help - High HCs

As stated in Radioheads doc there is no EGR system. The truck, GM 350 v8 with GVWR 6001-8500, is heavy duty and a lot of emission controls were not included for that sub model. I started replacing the Quadrajet with an edelbrock 1400. There was a smog referee that did some adjustments to the...

I'm not worried about gas prices. It's for in town fun runs and little league games - with the occasional dump run.

Using the VIN, it has the RPO code F44. According to the code sheet I see, it means:CHASSIS EQUIPMENT,HEAVY DUTY. Does this mean it would be 'Heavy Half'? Sorry, as I mentioned I am pretty new to this game.

Passing CA Smog help - High HCs

Oh interesting - Ill ask the SMOG guy when I take it in with the new carb. The GVWR is 6050 - I read that >6000 for that year did not have a cat. Its dual exhaust but I dont think that is indicative of Heavy Half's. I wouldn't know by looking at the suspension. I am new to this game.

Did it fail for high HCs or NO with the clogged EGR?

Passing CA Smog help - High HCs

Welp it all went south - the existing carb is shot. The fuel line threading in the carb body was in bad shape but thought I could save it with thread sealant. It was spewing fuel when I pooped the air cleaner off to tune. Bought an Edelbrock 1400 and will install in the next day or so. I see...

Thanks - will do. 1977s do not have a catalytic converter - I was told that testing hot was for the catalytic converter. Is that true?

Passing CA Smog help - High HCs

I have a 1977 GMC 5.7L 350 given to me from my dad. It passed smog no problem less than a year ago for the title transfer. Now, it failed CA smog due to high hydrocarbons (3485 ppm @ 15MPH and 1350 @ 25MPH). Also noteworthy is that the technician said the crankcase ventilation hose that feeds...
