What could this random tube attached to the exhaust be?

Does exhaust actually come out of that pipe? The heat rise isn’t actually connected to the exhaust but sits up against it so hot air rises.

Qjet to Edelbrock 1400 vacuum line puzzle- I need help

Quick update - Passed CA SMOG by capping the 'EGR' port on the EB 1400 and teeing manifold vacuum from the brake booster to feed the ported vacuum switch (labeled spark control valve in the diagram i posted earlier). She's on the road again and sounds great.

Success! Edelbrock 1400 was the answer. She's CA SMOG legal!

Passing CA Smog help - High HCs

Just a quick update- I talked to the ‘specialist’ and gave him the rundown. The short answer was get a different smog guy. He said cap the ‘egr’ port because it isn’t required. I need manifold vacuum for the ported vacuum switch so my plan is to tee off from the brake booster. So short answer is...

Passing CA Smog help - High HCs

On the contrary I am taking all the advice I can get. But as I work and have children, I cannot respond as quickly as some would like. I also have limited experience with some of the things asking. I can tell you yes it is running rich, just dumping fuel even after adjusting the float. Timing...

Passing CA Smog help - High HCs

It ran fine on the EB so I don’t think it’s spark or fuel. Timing was offset to the max allowable by ca. There is a ton of exhaust so I thought it was running super rich and couldn’t dial it back. I figured the hinge pin was stuck and not dropping in. When I opened it up it was th opposite, the...

No, it runs like crap. I tried adjusting and had some other shade tree mechs look at it. The EB was way better but CA says nope. This one is beyond my capabilities and I am planning on taking it to a QJ specialist. I might just let CA win this one, sell it and buy an exempt truck

That looks like 1406 not 1400…on the 1400, that manifold port on the bottom right says egr.

Also has to do with longevity of the part. Could work great for 2 weeks and then start spewing NOx. Without a proven track record, CA says no go. I agree in theory there should be no such thing as a visual inspection but they are covering their intentions there while also making it difficult in...

Passing CA Smog help - High HCs

I asked the smog guy if I could add a cat and he couldn’t give me an answer one way or the other because he’d have to look it up. I am going to throw the carb on and get it dialed in and hopefully have a winner there.

Passing CA Smog help - High HCs

I was as confused as you. Because the text in the CARB doc states that the manifold port has “egr functionality”, the carburetor needs an egr system for proper functioning. Since the stock truck does not have an egr system, I cannot add one. So basically wrong carb.

Passing CA Smog help - High HCs

Failed visual- the eddy 1400 carb, although carb compliant, has a manifold vacuum port for egr function. Since egr is not spec for this truck and this carb requires it- auto fail. At least the dude was kind enough to not charge me.

Qjet to Edelbrock 1400 vacuum line puzzle- I need help

Vacuum lines actually weren’t that complicated. The ‘control valve’ was required for the quadrant function but not for the Edelbrock. Yellow line went in to manifold and purple into ported/timed. Seems good. Few hiccups along the way but testing tomorrow.

Passing CA Smog help - High HCs

All my conversations and research trended towards that same conclusion. I can now understand why it would have to be carb compliant - because the product has the quality to perform over the period until the next test - but I don’t understand why I can’t add it to ensure I am not polluting...

I don’t want to keep you guys hanging so I’m posting an update. I had to replace the throttle linkage bracket which bolts on the last 2 bolts of the intake manifold. I was using a torque wrench to get in properly a snapped the bolt. So now I’m dealing with a busted post- not flush- stuck in the...

According to the smog report it was already labeled gross polluter but no one has said anything about where to get it repaired. I did all the repairs myself.

Do you think that a disconnected pcv hose, the one from the valve cover to the air cleaner, could cause such a large amount of HCs? >3000 ppm

Thanks - interesting that I can’t just add cats. And yes it is heavy duty. I retarded the timing only by 2 because that is the max now. I’m not sure what the machine was but it was multiple speed test. I changed plus and wires, swapped to a different CARB compliant carb. New air filter and...

Edelbrock says it’s street legal in 50 states- I don’t know when they were officially approved. I had to buy about 10 other parts to make it compatible thought. Just hope it works
