Just performed this swap with lots of help from the folks here. 85 donor motor, installed tbi heads and the tbi from my toasted 87 motor after trip to machine shop. Very happy. Worked the truck yesterday, runs like a swiss watch. Eric- waterpirate

Swap body instead of engine, tranny, front and rear ends etc...
Swapping a body onto another frame is a real pain, switching manufacturers can be even worse. There are plenty of cummins fans doing motor only swaps, and plenty of solid advise and parts lists, kits. I would stuff the motor you want into the truck you want and be happy. Thanx for the replies and the snark. Moot subject, I should have updated the thread. I scored a pair of oem rust free fenders from a salvage yard in northeast MD on Saturday. The only bitch is the yard monkey dented one taking it off, cause he would not " smoke wrench " the front bumper off...- waterpirate

So everybody and there brother is selling patch panels for the 87 for the rear section of the front fenders. No body has the front lower section for the 87. Is the lower front fender section for the earlier trucks the same below the marker light? Any help or point in the right direction is...- waterpirate

Thanx for the reply! LMC is sold out. My first choice was keystone through my buddies body shop, but they discontinued all the square stuff. Just my luck.... I will prolly order tomorrow and report back when parts arrive. In the meantime I will check out your build thread, Thanx Eric- waterpirate

I will third the temp sensor pain. Easy to check. If you pull the wire to the sensor the ecm will go to limp home mode. I would pull the wire and see what changes if anything. Eric- waterpirate

Painting Intake
I did not use any primer, GASP! I spent a lot of time cleaning, seriously a lot. Then sanded/polished the metal to smooth prior to applying paint. Preperation. Eric- waterpirate

I clear coated plenty of intakes back in the day, after a trip through the media cabinet. As already said the oil based clear shows wear and cracks, requires another trip to media to redo. Rebuild or scrap is from the perspective of expensive if you blow a cylinder or have a bottom end failure. That motor you found is a unicorn. It is worth what you are wig to pay. Eric- waterpirate

Given the choice between rebuilding a Detroit or scrapping, I would scrap. Given what you found and your plans, it is about what you are willing to pay. Most Detroit off road equip has been changed over to juan deere, or perkins for a reason. Eric- waterpirate

Outer Rocker First? Found solution
I would add, as a vetran of the body shop. Body men find the quickest way to do a quality repair and beat the book time. As square enthusiasts who are not getting paid for wrenching on our own stuff, slow and thorough works every time for quality end result. Eric- waterpirate

5.7 TBI Advice Needed
Have you looked into the temp sensor in the intake manifold? I went down a similar road before toasting the engine. If the truck runs, pull the temp sensor plug off and look for any change. The puter has a limp home mode when plug is removed. Hope this helps Eric- waterpirate

Thoughts on satin black
Steady hand and rustoleum from lowes my friend. Practice on your shed first so you can get a rythem and consistant pattern down. Satin is very foregiving. Eric- waterpirate
