    Can't set timing

Originally, I was going to tell the OP to do an exorcism of the space aliens messing with him, but I won't type that. I have enough trouble with them in the other end of the state. Rob, you should use my light then. And it's not an el-cheapo light, either. Even with good solid clean...

    Mystery Coolant leak

I have installed them dry many times with never a problem or leak, and have also used a thin film of Permatex aviation grade sealer on a few blocks. Your choice which way to go, but the best part is you will never have to worry about them again. Other than initial cost (not much more than steel)...

    Mystery Coolant leak

Won't fix his problem, but whenever I build an engine, I install brass freeze plugs. They will NOT rust out and leak, and cause a headache such as this. Been doing that for over 35 years and never once had an issue, it's a do it once thing and forget about it.

    85 305 in a k1500 - wont idle after smog removal

And IF you use the Edelbrock, make sure to get a good fuel pressure regulator, those carbs are very sensitive to too much fuel pressure and will flood.

    Torque converter questions

How can one ID a torque converter as to application, etc when there are no decals or numbers stamped on it? With all the different torque converters floating around, how does a person know what transmission it's supposed to be used with, how do you know the stall rate, etc ... I have a couple...

    Rear brake shudder

And the short brake shoe goes towards the front and the long shoe to the rear ?

Does this sound like it had work done

The engine sounds to me like it's in good shape, as long as it isn't smoking or knocking. Just for reference purposes, a vacuum gauge will lose about an inch of Hg reading for every thousand feet above sea level, so one will probably never get that high of a reading in the mountains where I am...

Any squarebody van guys? Got a odd question.

Get a short, skinny chauffer to drive you around,. Maybe install a set of hand controls if nothing else works.

Diagnose Engine Problems w Vac Guage

There are numerous sites online that have the same thing, just do a search for engine vacuum gauge readings, I'm sure more than one link will pop up.

    Transfer case support rod

I need to reinstall the rod on my K10 but the bolt that holds it to the bellhousing is broken off, and the only way to get it out is remove the engine or transmission, no room to get in there with anything to extract it. I swapped the 208 for a 241 (I like the heavier duty 241 idea) and it looks...

    Valve adjustment question

I have been building engines for decades, and up until recently I always adjusted them with the engine running as part of my old school method of tuning every aspect of an engine by ear. The last engine I did, I tried the "spin the pushrod until it stops turning, then go one full turn on the...

    Valve adjustment question

I'm going to throw a curveball into the thread, and I'm curious as to the outcome. I have done as you kids have done, tighten 1/2 to 3/4 turn max so I am at ease I didn't tighten too much, and I am tired of the valve clatter I still get. Sometimes 1 full turn does seem too much. Can never seem...

Has anybody removed ethanol from their gas ?

I'm up in the mountains, and no such things exist here. I live near a tiny town, and we are lucky to even have a couple gas stations, one sells regular unleaded and diesel, no mid grade or premium gas, so E-free will never happen here. And it takes about a half tank of gas each way to get to a...

Has anybody removed ethanol from their gas ?

Well, I guess I can quit buying groceries, propane for the fridge, stove, and water heater, and no more house supplies so I can start running E-free gas.

Has anybody removed ethanol from their gas ?

I have to drive a minimum of 60 miles one way to get any, then there's ONE station that sells it, at a high price.

Has anybody removed ethanol from their gas ?

I'm definitely sick and tired of having issues arising from ethanol in gas .. and not just on my trucks. Chainsaws, generators, pressure washer, and water transfer pumps are among the required gasoline operated equipment where I live and I have too much to deal with already. Dealing with added...

Swaping engine internals opinions, and does this look bad to you?

I could really use one where I live, when the mud is bad, nothing moves, and one of those would get me out and in. I might end up screwing up the road badly, but then again, it's so horrible already I don't think anybody would notice.

Swaping engine internals opinions, and does this look bad to you?

If I had the money to buy a deuce and a half off of you, then you could build/buy any engine you wanted.

    transmission oil change

Be prepared to make a mess and have ATF everywhere. And don't do it in a windy location or where a lot of dust gets stirred up. If your pan doesn't have a drain plug in it, do what I do, I find a spot inside where there is no interference with the filter or anything else, drill a hole and...

Swaping engine internals opinions, and does this look bad to you?

I would NOT run that crank as is. Have it machined and get the correct undersize bearings and you're good.

Should I yank my engine to do oil pan gasket?

The best part of yanking the engine is, it gives one a chance to clean everything up and give it a nice pretty new coat of Chevy orange paint.

What have you done to your square lately??

Did a compression test on the 383 stroker I built 22 years ago. Did both dry and wet test. When I assembled it in a dusty machine shop at the wrecking yard next to a woodstove, I was told it would not last, but 22 years and well over 100K VERY hard miles on it later, here's the readings: And...

As I was taught, to help eliminate vibration and cracking/failing due to work hardening.

    Crazy square body prices.

One of the best things about driving an ugly old truck is nobody will mess with it, they figure it doesn't run well, and the owner doesn't care where he drives so lots of folks DO get out of his way !!! The sad part is, I am directing the executor of my will ( a VERY loyal and dedicated friend...

    Crazy square body prices.

If I didn't depend on this truck to get me out and in when the roads are too muddy, I might consider accepting an offer of 10K cash. 383 stroker runs good, drives real nicely with tight steering and front end, limited slip in front axle, new tires, upgraded the T case from a 208 to a 241. Body...
