700R4 1-2 shift issue, please help!

Did you check the gear for damage and the shaft trueness on the governor? My old governor had a wobbly shaft, and the 1-2 shift was horrible. It would scream, and then would violently go bam into 2nd gear. And that Transgo full kit is a fantastic upgrade. You’ll be cooking with fish grease...

Cracked manifold - looking @ headers and exhaust on a budget. Suggestions?

I’ve got a set of SBC long tube headers laying around that I’ll sell you for $80. They came off a G Body, but they should fit a K-truck well. I got them for my Jimmy, but I don’t want to rock the exhaust boat right now. They’re painted with high heat paint and located in 39191. Don’t know how...

Complete a/c rebuild question or two

You have a link? Dexcool, also known as Dexkill, is the infamous, orange propylene glycol coolant that many people despise because of its purported degradation of seals and sludging up of coolant passages. It’s also grossly incompatible with ethylene glycol.

Are my coolant and voltage gauges accurate - where to test

If your engine bay ground network isn’t right, it can also impact those readouts.

Air injection uses the same two pin connector.

Spark plug wires management - simple aftermarket solution?

Back when Roadkill was this beautiful thing that didn’t alienate 50% of its audience with a paywall, I learned about the zip tie method. Chrisfix is an excellent channel, but you’ll see below Mike Finnegan doing it, one of two guys that really amplified my interest in this peculiar hobby.

84 C10 charcoal canister line question

Does your emissions call for both a ported and manifold source? I believe it does on the spaghetti years. If there’s only one source of vacuum for the canister, it should be ported so it doesn’t constantly purge. You can just test the carb ports for ported with a vacuum gauge. Whichever one is...

Complete a/c rebuild question or two

I don’t know how the white tube should outperform the blue tube on the highway, my understanding is you take one, lose one in terms of city and highway performance, but they both do sub-freezing output on the highway. My white tube is in an R4 compressor system, and the blue tube is in a V5...

    Thread stripped in rear cylinder

The helicoil should be okay in a lower stress situation like that. It’s failed me in an extreme stress setting, but I was probably trying to use it outside of its design capabilities. I’ve used the solid steel inserts for busted spark plug threads on small engine aluminum heads, and I like the...

Need info on Quality of LMC "Premium" Hood

I don’t know if you saw, but the AMD hood has some crappy reviews that would make me think twice. They seem to collectively complain about it being dented pretty good out of the box, not so much with fit or finish issues. Check Summit for most of the reviews, and I think Jegs also has one.

Complete a/c rebuild question or two

I used the blue o-tube in a variable compressor/originally R12 setup with factory compressor. I’m assuming this one is non-continuous, but that shouldn’t matter much overall. I can say it does help noticeably unless it was sitting in a hundred plus degree parking lot and you don’t move. It’ll...

A/C rebuild list. May help someone

No biggie. It’s just that PAG and mineral oil like each other about as much as the Saudis and Iranians or two other groups that fervently dislike each other.

What do I need for a fuel pump replacement?

I’ve seen it once in a carbed 1989 454. Never on anything else either. Yeah, you shouldn’t need either, and the hacksaw blade trick works well. I did my most recent one in thirty minutes working that way.

A/C rebuild list. May help someone

No mineral oil unless you’re setting it up with R12. PAG for R134a.

What ate my front u joints? Dana 44

I’ll attach the data sheet I read for the Mystik. The low temperature range is actually exceptional for that one. The brown lithium grease I use says zero degrees on the bottom end, and the store brand moly-based grease says the same. Phillips 66 makes a low temp moly grease for polar proximal...

    Belt sizes

Oh, that’s been done a while ago. I mean for the poor S.O.B.s that have to undergo an emissions inspection.

What ate my front u joints? Dana 44

I looked at the data sheet, and this seems like a good lithium-based grease (what you want on suspension stuff and u-joints). It should do the job well. I’ve been using the brown lithium grease, but this looks like a winner, too. Unless you were running at -11*F or colder, or it’s not compatible...

    My 92 gmc

You have two different grilles between the pictures shown? The earlier style GMC grille looks way better than the later one, but the later ones are a lot tougher and easier to find in good shape used. The earlier ones love to crack. I don’t love the GMT400s like I do the earlier ones, but GM...

    Ujoints

Best of luck, sir. Also, don’t be too rough on the driveshaft ears. Even an incremental bend inward can ruin you as far as getting both retainers secured.

Those do have the clips inside, and they’re a serviceable joint.

    Fuel leak @ tank?

If it was at the back and leaking when full to the brim, I’d say check the hose clamp tightness on the filler and vent hoses. Otherwise, defer to what Bruce said.

    Ujoints

DANA/Spicer 53147X for me. You heated them up to make the plastic ooze out of there and release the old joint to be driven out? Also, don’t touch it after it cools off! I’ll admit I have sensitive skin, but it irritated the shit out of me!

    Brake shake

I agree that something should be felt in the steering wheel for warped rotors, but I’d look at the rear drums being out of round.
