    Upgrading 1987 R10 A/C to R134a parts / questions

Most people will just lump the R/Vs in with the C/Ks, but it’s good that you use the right nomenclature. Lines are fine if you’re keeping the R4 style. You need to get the new service ports in the conversion kit they sell, Ford blue orifice tube, accumulator, compressor, a small bottle of PAG...

    SORRY MECHANIC

I agree, but those good mechanics are in the minority, and you’ll pay a decent amount for their services. Most of them are between mediocre and bad. There might be 1 in 10 that are fairly solid, and 1 in 100 might be true pros at their trade. I’m talking independents. I just assume dealer techs...

    AC HELP NEEDED..

Yeah, that’s the old “I’m installing a new compressor, but something’s not going right” cheat sheet. The 5/8 versus 3/4 suction port size difference is what I was alluding to, and then Taylor can see those five different hose blocks. Yes, I’d hold onto any A6, and there are a lot of rebuild...

    no fluid to right caliper

Same thing happened to me on a vehicle that sat for 15 years. The driver front line was totally swollen shut, and it’d yank to the right when braking.

    AC HELP NEEDED..

R4 compressors themselves are generally identical besides differences in coil clocking and possible manifold variances. Some coils are 9 o’clock and some are 12. That’s not the end of the world, though, to have to work around. You might have to lengthen the pigtail in some, but not all, cases...

    no fluid to right caliper

An internally swollen brake hose can do exactly this in some cases, or it’ll act as a check valve in other cases and cause the caliper to stick. A serious debris impaction could also, but my money’s on the hose. I’m assuming you tried to bleed the brakes? If you undo the hose at the banjo...

    AC HELP NEEDED..

I guarantee you the oil’s black and nasty, and add the o-tube to the accumulator replacement. I wouldn’t add oil without draining the old out of the compressor and flushing the system. Need to know whether you have an A6 or R4 compressor. The internal compressor and manifold seals cannot remain...

    Compressor fittings dont fit

Has anyone tried the Dirty Dingo compressor adapter? It’s supposed to allow you to use the factory R4 bracketry for a Sanden 508.

Last squarebody GMC Jimmy built year 1991

The GM Heritage Center might be able to help you out if you write them. Also @Keith Seymore might know who to reach out to or where this info might be. He was up at Flint Assembly during the square body years, but I want to say he was doing GMT400 stuff when your Jimmy was born. Can’t remember...

87-91 chevy TBI issues, "Code 42"

I can usually identify snakes, and I’ve never had a run in with a venomous one, just plenty of the non-venomous kind, and I’ll either let them go away or pick them up and toss them away. They don’t bother me so much. Wasps on the other hand...

What causes brake distribution to change when braking in reverse with 4 wheel disc

I’m no physics major, but the first thing that came to mind was also a pair of sticky calipers or a pair of brake hoses that’re collapsing on the inside. If it was just one hose or one caliper, it would pull to the side opposite the problem. Is it a big dual piston on the front and a baby...

Coolant Temp sender on driver side head - new connector / rig replacement?

Your sender has the ball on the end? Even still, it wouldn’t surprise me if there was a pigtail in stock locally right now.

Haha, try 15 in the bayou. “Make sure there aren’t snakes or raccoons living in there when you open the door.” :| But yeah, that stuff happens. I’m sure you’ll trace it down. Luckily there’s only a finite amount of things that it could be, and you already know what they are.

87-91 chevy TBI issues, "Code 42"

Haha, yep. I will say that I adjusted timing one time on mine, and it went crazy when it came time for the self-test. Jerking, bogging, codes thrown, and ultimately dying. I hadn’t disconnected the battery to let it reset after messing with the timing, but once I did that, it was fine. From then...

what do these spark plugs indicate about running condition?

There’s some carbon activity there. If your spark wasn’t hot enough when it got to the plugs, the stuff you replaced should help that now. That or some carb tuning might be in order, but I wouldn’t be freaking out and running to NAPA if these were my plugs.

    Just built 355 overheating!

The ESC circuit is pretty good at quickly catching knocks and adapting. I say quickly, but that concedes that a baud rate of 160 is quick. It’s quaint, but I like it. Respectfully, I think electric fans and seven core radiators are a deflective solution that allow the problem to remain. If it...

87-91 chevy TBI issues, "Code 42"

Joe did an excellent job of explaining the circuit. The only thing I’ll add is that a bitchy (not good but not totally failed) pickup coil can trip this code intermittently. It’ll test within spec, but it’s gone when you actually go to use it. From what I’ve seen online, this isn’t a super...

HEI Distributor - Do I need to replace any of these parts?

If the advance canister holds vacuum, the plate is free, the advance arms and springs are lubed, there isn’t excessive rotational slop, and you don’t hear radio interference that correlates with a constantly advancing/retarding spark curve, I wouldn’t be too worried. The capacitor is just a...

    TBI issues, please help diagnose...

Can’t second the Delco advice enough. I wouldn’t even use another one to begin with. Maybe Delphi, but that’s it. Those cheap ones are prone to high energy voltage leaks at the moment of death, and they can take practically anything with them: ignition coils, pickup coils, injectors... Anything...

I hate to be “that guy,” I was going to hold my tongue initially, and I genuinely hope that I don’t come across as a dick because it’s not my intention, but a very simple reference voltage/return voltage/ground test with a DVOM would have ruled a failing TPS in or out. If all the static numbers...

    TBI issues, please help diagnose...

How are you coming to the conclusion that there’s no spark? If there’s an intermittent loss, the ICM is always the chief culprit, and you should test it if you’re unsure, but the pickup coil and the ignition coil are also capable of causing trouble. There are home tests for the latter two, but...
