Link Belt vs. (Double) Roller Timing Chains

My old car’s started making a moderately loud knocking/rattling noise near the harmonic dampener and water pump. It’s not bottom end thankfully, and I’m 99% sure it’s not valve related either. I’m gonna get my stethoscope when the sun’s out, but it looks like I might be replacing a timing set. I...

Wind noise is running me stir crazy

Have some of you talked about doubling up your door seals with made-to-fit seals and then using hardware store weather stripping to help combat wind noise? If not, maybe I dreamed that and if so, just move along. These aren’t the droids you’re looking for.

Intro and is it worth fixing?

That looks like a keeper, especially for a Blazer. You might want to take it somewhere to see where the caster and camber settings are compared to factory spec. You can adjust with sleeves or shims if it’s not too far off, but that looks like localized damage to me.

    1985 cassette player

I got the same radio in 10/10 condition out of a van for like $10.

    89 suburban speedo

It might be your cable, and if not, you may be able to get it serviced. There’s gotta be someone who fixes mechanical speedos there. What kind of issues are you having?

    87 K5 keeps blowing ECMB 10amp fuse

Check for heat stressed wires around the exhaust manifold and engine block that maybe rubbing up against metal and shorting to ground. That was more of an ECM-I issue for me, but I think it’s still worth a look. I’d also check the 1987 MY electrical supplement and follow what’s tied to that...

New to me 1988 Cutlass Ciera xc

People really overlook these cars, but I see a lot of sedans and wagons still. You can beat these things to hell, and they’ll still work for you. Congrats!

My 3rd Car, a FREE 1990 Olds Cutlass Supreme

This car... What a piece of work. It’s been offline since Friday, 10/11. Two days prior, I started to have issues with a runaway idle one minute, and the next it would idle normally. That Friday I tried to get in and go, and it would only idle real fast or not fire up at all. Give it a little...

    Fuel leaks down?

Bone apple tea... Just kidding, OP. Anyway, Quadrajets don’t store much fuel to begin with, and as mentioned, the properties of ethanol make it a losing battle. If you’re sitting for a long time, I’d switch to non-ethanol. The short shelf life of E10 gasoline in conjunction with the deposits...

Engine break in run - rotating engine and filling carb bowls?

The electric pump will be sufficient to fill it up, and it will do it relatively fast. I’d always spray a shot or two of starting fluid or a pour a couple ounces of gas down the barrels, after a long sit, new carb, carb rebuild, whatever. I’ve never deviated from mechanical fuel pumps in past...

    Oil Consumption Question

Before we start engraving the headstone, I’d make sure you have a working PCV valve if you haven’t replaced it. I’d say vacuum lines, but it sounds like you already got that taken care of.

    Finding my old 78 k10

Your CarFax might hit on a shop where it had maintenance done recently, which would be a big help if they were willing to disclose contact info or at least ask the owner if they’d be willing to talk to you.

    Interior Rear View Mirror

I’ve also seen those inserts that go over the factory mirror that turn into a backup camera when you pop into reverse if we’re talking about upgrades. I like the GMT800 compass/thermometer upgrade better because that’s important info to have without sacrificing aesthetics, plus it’s a slippery...

    CAR ID Insane Shipping Costs.

I’ve noticed that, too. I’ve ordered stuff directly from China, Israel, and Greece, ended up saving a good chunk of $, and the turnaround wasn’t too bad either.

    1980 gmc jimmy steering stabilizer

If you’re not in a huge hurry, I’ve got the hardware for one side of the stabilizer at my other place (factory setup). It’d probably be 5-6 days before I could get to it, but I could mail it to you if you want.

    Power steering gearbox noise

PS fluid level? Not only is it where it’s supposed to be, but is it holding that level also? Might be looking at a failing pump or a blockage in the power steering circuit where a flush and replacement of your return line if it’s cracked would come in handy. It could also be a generally...

Converting a TBI coil to a cylindrical coil

What about voltage disparity between points and HEI? I’d think you’d need a blaster coil or whatever high voltage options are available. It seems like a high voltage points coil is close enough to an HEI/TBI coil that the loss of performance would be negligible.

    TV cable replacement

You’re likely better off than no cable, but I’d be very cautious about running it with the cable not right. If you have to go anywhere, baby it, but if you can avoid driving it until it’s fixed, do that. The trick, I found, is you either need to get a helper to pull on the carburetor end to...

    Interior Rear View Mirror

Mine still works when you flip it for the night function. The problem is when there’s a temperature jump, it’ll pop out and I have to put it back in. It’s a minor nuisance, and I’d rather get a new one, but it’s pretty low priority.

    Interior Rear View Mirror

A good glass company can cut you a piece of glass to pop in over the old one. I say a good shop because it looks bad if it’s all jagged and doesn’t fit right, it’s not ideal.

K10 front calipers don't fit back on with new pads

Did the new calipers fit even slightly better when you first installed them? If so, it might be worth getting new flexible brake hoses. Bad hoses can act as a check valve or a plug and make any caliper piston either extend and stay that way or have serious issues when you go to retract the...

GMC door panels - need price

Hmm, I didn’t even notice the screw holes, but now I do. I’d say don’t “screw” someone over, but just ask on the higher side, and if they want to haggle with you, keep an open mind.

Holy cow, that looks great! Great idea!

GMC door panels - need price

They’re complete rather than bare, which is the main selling point. I could see myself giving $100 for the set but no more than that. If the guy offers $80, I’d also take that but no less. JMO...
