    90 suburban dead

The pickup coil is relatively failure prone, I’ve even seen it where they’ll pass the test listed in the factory manual and still be bad. The ignition coil can fail, but those failures are considerably rarer. HEI coils are a bit more failure prone over a long time, and poor grounding can cause...

I agree. I don’t do Delco caps and rotors anymore because they use aluminum, but I only do Delco ignition modules.

Hover a test light above the coil pin and then over an exposed pin on the cap to test for spark getting from A to B. They’re not usually failure prone, though. My bet is the ignition module if there’s no fuel while cranking and no spark. Also, the thing with the cap and rotor... I’d recommend...

    Looking for another work truck

I should have clarified about the Takata thing that it’s a recall item. It’s just something to check and an extra nuisance, but I wouldn’t let that be a deal breaker. Sounds like you’ve got some good insight above to go on.

    Looking for another work truck

I’d definitely take an OBD II scanner with you, the best you can justify buying or that you can borrow. I think you’ve mentioned having newer Ford work trucks, and I don’t recall if you’ve had newer GM trucks, but ABS/Stabilitrak issues seem to span the newer vehicles more consistently than...

Putting Belts Back On correctly - 87 R10

Here’s me before I rerouted the heater hose, deleted smog, and the crank pulley and dampener are off in this pic. The way you said it is right, but here’s a visual anyway.

    Options for engine swap

I respect the Gen III setups for all that they can do out of the box, so to speak, plus they’re super reliable if they’re maintained properly and even sometimes when they’re not, but there’s enough I don’t like about them to dissuade me from doing it or buying a vehicle that has one. I like...

    Anyone prefer the mini starters?

I do prefer the sound of the old ones, as well, but that’s about it besides it’s already there, and you can pretty much indefinitely rebuild/reman the old unit. I don’t know if there’s a savings there over a period of say 30 or 40 years, but I could see that being the case. Clearance issues...

    Vortex heads

Between you guys on this one. I think that early 12Vs (89-93) are pretty desirable and solid motors. You have a very powerful engine with some room for improvement, and you have a very simple, mechanical setup handling everything. At this time, you had the 6.2, which was what it was, and the 7.3...

What to do? What to do?

#2 by a good bit for me, too. #1 isn’t bad, but in the long run, it seems like you’d be playing musical chairs, just with engines instead of humans. Too many potential snags for #3 (steam holes, compression bump, the possibility of only partially/temporarily fixing your problem after all the...

    84 K10 305 to 350 swap

Gotcha. I like the Quadrajet, and that’s what I’d do with the Edelbrock intake. I depend on one with my daily driver, and bear in mind it’s the vilified E4ME feedback model, but it’s let me down zero times, and the original owner had the same results. That’s almost 300K miles of trouble free...

    84 K10 305 to 350 swap

Yes, they can, but I’d still ask them individually to make sure they don’t shaft you. I’m sure there are some people who could do that with their eyes closed while in their backyard having Miller time, but I’m not one of them so I’d commission a reputable machinist to do it for me. Are you...

Is this the engine?!? Did I find the one?

No, but this is what I’ve always used. http://outintheshop.com/faq/casting/castings2.html And you’re very welcome.

Is this the engine?!? Did I find the one?

Just addressed this in the other thread but to reiterate, there’s no chance that those are Vortec heads, but the block will accept your roller setup as long as it’s not a </= 1986 block with a TBI top end. You’ll need to date the casting number to be sure, which is easy since it’s not installed.

    84 K10 305 to 350 swap

Unless it came out of an F Body or 9C1 Caprice, it won’t have one installed, but it will accept the roller cam. You’ll just need the installation kit. Make sure it’s got the fuel pump block off plate, and if the block’s drilled already behind the plate, I think that makes it totally worthwhile...

    84 K10 305 to 350 swap

You can absolutely put Vortec heads on an ‘86 or older short block. You’ll still need the intake and Vortec valve covers, and you’re limited to using a flat tappet cam. For me, that’s not a deal breaker, plus you know with 100% certainty that it’ll have the fuel pump eccentric instead of maybe...

    84 K10 305 to 350 swap

I’ll just go ahead and chime in. Answering your questions, respectively, yes, yes, and no. The big thing to look for in a used one besides anything common to a used engine like loss of compression, blow by, significant leakage of any kind, and/or hacky repairs is cracks in the heads. 96-99...

    How to test calipers?

Just surface rust on the caliper? Based on your appraisal of the situation, I’d be pretty optimistic about the caliper pistons if the seal is good. JMO, I think calipers are hardier than people who indiscriminately replace them would think, and I think hoses are oft overlooked as a failure...

305 build advice. Any and all advice is appreciated!

It looks like this is pretty much settled, but I will say that the compression ratio for the LE9 you have should be 9.5:1. Something like that. I’m sure you’d see a poop compression ratio in the 8s or even 7s with some of the many throwaway heads that came on the 305, but that wouldn’t be the...

Link Belt vs. (Double) Roller Timing Chains

I wish it was, but it and the pulley spin true, and there’s no cracking or mushrooming (yet). I replaced it exactly two years ago today so it should have around 30K miles, give or take. I drove it some after letting it warm and the noise did quiet down a fair bit. By the time I had my...
