Vince's TBI woes, progressive revelations, and tbi mods.

My TPS ended up causing my idle problems. Had a bad spot in the throttle positioning. Key on motor off and moving the throttle it went from .68 to 1.28 volts on my scan tool. Replacing the TPS fixed my idle problems. Clayton Sent from my SM-A705U using Tapatalk

    Function of TBI o2 sensor.

Bosch makes the OE oxygen sensor for our trucks. I just replaced mine because it was reading really slow on my scanner. Sent from my SM-A705U using Tapatalk

    Question about removing belts...

This is why I converted mine over to the newer serpentine system. Plus it upgraded my charging system to 105 amps, originally mine came with an 80 amp alternator. I got everything I needed off a 92 GMC C1500 Sierra at my local wrecking yard. Sent from my SM-A705U using Tapatalk

    Question about removing belts...

Last time I had to replace a belt I had a 3-piece suit on and it wasn't my car and it was raining. Working in shops I've seen belts break and cause damage to other expensive engine parts. The newer serpentine belts don't even crack, you measure the rib depth with a special measurement guage...

Not worth it to me. If the belts over 5 years old it's getting replaced. Sent from my SM-A705U using Tapatalk

    Question about removing belts...

Somebody swapped an older motor into that truck that had the older v-belt system like my 87 did prior to converting it to the serpentine system. Sent from my SM-A705U using Tapatalk

Running rough when the engine warms up.

Did you set your's to 0 degree's?. TBI motors need to be set to 0 degree's at base idle. Alway's carry a spare ICM in your truck. Clayton Sent from my SM-A705U using Tapatalk

Running rough when the engine warms up.

That's a little low. You should be closer to 195 degree's. Mine run's between 190 and 195. Do you have a 195 degree thermostat installed in your engine?. That's what it require's. Clayton Sent from my SM-A705U using Tapatalk

Need help sorting out no idle on new 5.7 TBI engine

Your welcome Charlie, glad I could help out. I miss my 67 Camaro, and my 73 K5 Blazer. They were just old cars that ate alot of gas back then. I never figured they would gain the value that they have. Happy Holidays Charlie. Clayton Sent from my SM-A705U using Tapatalk

Need help sorting out no idle on new 5.7 TBI engine

Set it in drive to between 575-600 rpm's. Set your parking brake and block the wheels so the truck won't roll. Ground A-B terminals on the OBD-1 plug under your dash like you do to read codes. Turn key on but don't start for 30 seconds then turn off and unground the A-B terminals in the OBD-1...

1988 Burban TBI throwing 42 code

Check your base timing with the EST unplugged to verify it is set to zero degree's. Turn off the engine then reconnect the EST connection. Make sure you do this with the engine warmed up. Recheck your timing, normally ecm will advance the timing 15 degree's. If the 42 code still shows...

Need help sorting out no idle on new 5.7 TBI engine

Check your TPS. Should show about 1/2 a volt when at idle. I replaced mine because it went from .68 to 1.28 as the accelerator pedal was pressed slowly with the motor off but the key was on. My truck runs great now. I was able to use a scan tool on mine but you can do it with a multimeter. Just...

    Rough country trash?

My 87 V20 is like that with the 4" Rancho springs in the front and blocks in the back. Quad shocks up front don't help the ride either. Back in 1990 when I installed it the ride didn't seem to be so harsh. I must be getting old [emoji846]. Clayton Sent from my SM-A705U using Tapatalk

Heat that ignition module up before you test it. They fail when they are warmed up. The module could be bad and still pass if tested cold. Sent from my SM-A705U using Tapatalk

Charlie, check the CST by removing the wire connector and probing the sensor terminals with a multimeter set on OHMS. At 210 degrees F. You should show 185 OHMS. If it's higher your sensor is bad. Download the Driveability and emissions manual that's been stickied in one of the forums, I forget...

Check your TPS. I did the same thing with the battery cables a month ago. I ended up replacing my IAC valve, TPS, and O2 Sensor. I will never let a neighbor touch my truck again. I thought my new alternator was fried, got lucky. Sent from my SM-A705U using Tapatalk
