Want to build a good horsepower, good fuel economy engine for a 1978 c20 with stock 350. I don't know much and need help.

For starters, these old square bodies aren't very aerodynamic, therefore fuel economy isn't one of their strong suits.. Second item on your agenda -- good mpg and power don't fit very well in the same sentence.. You'll find yourself giving up some of one to gain the other.. The carburetor, rear...

Oil pressure sending unit on manifold 305

@Ricko1966, Yes, just like pulling teeth. He is too busy thinking and typing to look at ANYTHING except that mass of wires.. @duece1951.. Look at the damn diagram that Taylor posted.. Near the center of the diagram is an oil pressure switch. It has THREE wires on the plug, NOT TWO.. I've...

    No dash lights

Harley, I made a mistake in my suggestion.. Jgonick followed my sage advice and referenced an up-to-date diagram and he and I had a discussion about it.. The orn40 circuit does indeed, provide power from the tail light fuse for the tail lights.. it continues on from the headlight switch to the...

    No dash lights

Not to beleaguer the point but the courtesy lights are probably not on the circuit with neither the tail lights or dash lights.. Depending on the model year, the stop lights could be on the same circuit with courtesy lights. He has an aftermarket fuse box and possible wiring harness, so all bets...

    No dash lights

The fuse you checked is for the gauges, not the lights you're talking about. The dash lights and tail lights are on the same circuit, In addition to the tail light fuse, the dash lights have a separate fuse. The power for the dash lights come from the tail light circuit.. The dash light fuse can...

Oil pressure sending unit on manifold 305

That's my thoughts also.. Trying to read oil pressure from a gauge hooked to a switch.. Pictures will tell the story...

Oil pressure sending unit on manifold 305

At this point, it isn't a good idea to conduct a parts substitution.. If the fault is in the wiring and has cause the gauge to fail, the same fate would occur to the good gauge. Let's get to the root cause of the inoperable gauge first. Plus, it's much easier to check and test circuits with the...

Oil pressure sending unit on manifold 305

Like Rick said, the oil pressure is NOT monitored at the intake manifold. 99% of SBCs monitor the oil pressure via a sender screwed into an oil passage at the top of the block immediately behind the manifold and slightly under the distributor.. You should have 2 sensing units -- one at the top...

    No power at Temperature sensor

When the ignition is switched on, power is applied to the various gauges and other items on the cluster through the pink wire at the cluster plug. From the plug, power is distributed via traces on the printed circuit board. The gauges and their needles have no "assigned" position when the...

    T/L CTSY fuse keeps blowing

Rick, mine is old enough to have fathered yours.. I bought mine in the late 70s around 1976 when I went to work for an Olds dealer... It's still in excellent condition. I keep the meter in a padded metal box that candy originally came in. My theory is the metal shields the meter from any...

    T/L CTSY fuse keeps blowing

I'm the same way, irritates the h e fence posts out of me... The only thing along those lines that irritates me more is when I come across a tool someone else has left on a car I'm working on.. Unless I know the person, I know that the person who lost it will never find it. Rick, be sure you go...

    T/L CTSY fuse keeps blowing

[EDIT --- Yes Rick, I know for a fact the "sender" as you call it is a circuit breaker and not a flasher relay. I've had mine apart. I've also made two or three of them using a variety of breaker values. Take yours apart and see for yourself.. On a lesser note... I assume responsibility for you...

    T/L CTSY fuse keeps blowing

I'm not sure just how you use that bulb, but I'm assuming you connect it across the terminals of the fuse that's blowing.. Of course, the light would come on and then go out when the short is found and "disconnected".. Rick, I would never be the person to criticize success. If the bulb load...

    T/L CTSY fuse keeps blowing

About the instrument lights not working... Those lights have a fuse all of their own, however, they get their power from the tail light circuit.. If the tail light fuse blows for any reason, the instrument lights also quit working even though their fuse is still intact.

    T/L CTSY fuse keeps blowing

There are no written instructions for locating any specific fuse blowing short.. Shorts can occur on any wire anywhere in your vehicle.. The worse thing a person can do is install a heavier fuse. STOP doing that immediately. As Taylor said, doing so will eventually cause a fire. Fuses are...

    Busted Alternator Bolt

I'm probably arriving late to this party, but that broken bolt is an easy repair. As a mechanic for over 30 years, I have seen quite a few of those same broken bolts.. Using the following technique, I've had 100% success at removing the broken piece from the head.. Disconnect the POS battery...

    LMC EFI Tank Sender problem

You're still doing it --- type, type, type, before reading what I said... The last sentence in the 1st paragraph of post #5, I said "I'm betting you'll find that new gauge is defective or incompatible.." In post #9, I also told you that if you get good readings when testing the sending units...

Quick ? On installing steering wheel..?

The "stem" doesn't stick out at the top, but yes, it goes through a hole in the lock plate and into the wheel's hub. When the wheel is down the proper amount on the shaft, the top of the splines are down about 1/8" or thereabout.

    Dash lights not working

You do realize we're having trouble believing the auto parts industry is that bad in your area, although I do believe what you said about AutoZone.. In any case, you've been provided with part numbers and at least one internet supplier.. Get on the computer, use the URL provided and order a...

Quick ? On installing steering wheel..?

Looks like someone has already been "smacking" on the shaft. That's a good way to damage threads and also knock something out of alignment or adjustment. To remove the steering wheel, use a proper wheel/gear puller. It's never a good idea to pound a piece into place.. Just screw the nut on and...
