    Lost my rear end.

After many years of abuse and not being nice to my 3.08:1 Gov-Lock rear end, I blew a spider and there are no parts available in the free world of which I am aware. If I hadn't ripped some teeth off the spiders, this would have been a lot easier and cheaper. I have the loader for the Gov-Lock...

I’m interested in swapping out the TH350 for a 700R4

How many bands do you believe a 4700 has? Beside that --- was there ever a 700 without a LU converter? Just curious.

    Wiper Pulse Module #15598496

Once spring happens (it's -32F here today) I will purchase a later model board with the motor and gearbox as a unit and see if it can be adapted. Don't ask why - but I may need a new column-mounted wiper control arm and associated wiring - again.

New crate engine oil priming/ ignition timing impact if the distributor is mis-installed

12V @1K Amps can kill, but it's usually the fields collapsing in the starter motor that generate the high Amps - much like an ignition coil that uses field-collapse to induce high voltage to the cap/rotor/plug wires and spark plugs. I've never had so much as a tingle while bumping a starter -...

I’m interested in swapping out the TH350 for a 700R4

I know you forgot that the 700R4 has a numerically HIGHER ratio in 1st/Low gear - compared to the 350 - right? I am and have run 3.08:1 gears in my '86 for over 30 years and have no problems --- if you want "lower" gears, there's always 4/Low. FTR: I haul an 18' 10,000 lb load of firewood...

    Wiper Pulse Module #15598496

Has anyone tried to install the more modern self-contained wiper motor with the pulse board inside it? Will it physically fit the '87 K5?

New crate engine oil priming/ ignition timing impact if the distributor is mis-installed

There's a lot of discussion about the correct way to drop the distributor into the cam and the oil pump - ostensibly trying to get both of them in the right position to just fall into place. It's easier than that and there's a much smoother process that I have used professionally for over 55...

    Wiper Control Module

Both wire/plug ends are female --- I don't see how that could work. The module is male on both ends and one end has 5 connex, the other has 7. I'm at a loss how to do that.

EFE, traditional Heat riser & thermac informational

I won't say it's right, the way I am running my K5 --- I removed the Thermac for stupid reasons --- but I have an Edelbrock Q-Jet and an electric choke at least and an abiding belief that a good choke is worth moving to Tecate, Mexico from Montana, Anywhere. As an aside --- I still have an...

    Wiper Control Module

I hear you --- and kinda-sortta agree. Let me explain .... If I were to use a good working original module, it does pause at the end of one cycle and then some sort of countdown timer sends power to the wiper motor again and it goes through the same cycle over and over. What it doesn't do...

    Shuddering when braking

I didn't notice if this vehicle in question was raised or not. If it is raised, I had this same crazy vibration when I followed the faulty instruction sheet and put the taper in, in the wrong direction. This caused a severe vibration as the rear driveshaft was being pulled out of the...

    Sbc dumping oil

Wix is no longer Wix and the NAPA Gold WAS a Wix --- but it's kinda clouded especially if it's from Evilbay and Amazon. Confused? So am I and I just buy ACs any more. If you buy ACs, make sure they aren't counterfeit. How can you tell? Usually by the price --- but the packaging doesn't look...

    Wiper Control Module

I don't want to resurrect a zombie post about this - but I wonder what the current thinking is about a replacement for the pulse control module under the steering column? I had one with a bad solder joint that I re-flowed and it worked for a while. Now it too, is dead and smells really bad...

EFE, traditional Heat riser & thermac informational

OK --- I have a little time to slay, so I have something to say about the TAC system (aka: Thermac). I worked. Very well. On some of the GM big block motorhomes and local-delivery type trucks, they used the TAC and a TVA (ne:VIDS) ignition vacuum advance/retard as the ONLY emission controls...

EFE, traditional Heat riser & thermac informational

You've put up a lot to digest, and what I've read so far is truthful and honest. Bravo. Up front and right here - I am not in a bashing mood nor do I want to create (much) debate, as I find your article pretty damned good - so far. I DO wonder, however, if you factored-in the advent of the...

2 or 4 inch lift kit

I saw that instruction sheet just recently --- and I'm sure it's in the garage --- where it's now -1°F --- so you KNOW i'm not gonna go out there until I get some better thermal numbers later on.

    Comments on gear pattern?

I've never worried about or tried to actually correct backlash as it is the end product when everything else is running a good pattern. It's more-or-less WYSIWYG after all else is set up ---> correctly. Backlash has always been a spooky bugaboo to anyone who doesn't work on differentials ---...

    1986 Engine Wiring Question

There are DIVERTER Valves and then there is a thing called a GULP Valve. The Diverter valve sent excess air into a sorta muffler on the side of the A.I.R control valve where it was dumped out to the atmosphere - ostensibly quietly as the muffler was full of fiberglass to keep the noise of the...

    87 R1500 Quad Headlight Question

I remember this problem as I worked on these vehicles when they were still pretty new. At the moment, I don't remember the answer --- but I THINK it was a manufacturer's option to use the long or the short pins, but they were switch-matched in that a short shaft won't work in a long switch...

    87 R1500 Quad Headlight Question

As a California retired Brake/Lamp/Smog Inspector --- I can shed some light on this --- sorry for the pun .......... The various states either approved or didn't approve the quad lights from GM for a while --- California being one of them --- for a while anyway. There will be some that light...

2 or 4 inch lift kit

That orange K5 as my avatar is up 2" in the front with new springs and 2" spacers in the back. Below, there is about 1300 lbs tongue weight on the hitch from a load of firewood in the trailer - so it looks a little down in the back. The 2" spacers in the back came with an instruction sheet...

Automatic transmission newbie asking basic questions

The TCC can take a lot of abuse ---- up to a point. The weakest part is the sprag which can roll-over during a WOT high RPM shift -- and I've even ruined a few going for 4th/OD and when it shifted, it makes a strange 'growling" noise and then the damage is done. It's still driveable --- just...

    The old 700R4 questions!

I don't know where you got your information but from a dealership, I can guess. The early 700s had parts failures and were basically a field test for GM to see how they stood up in public hands - but to say that the OD would "shuttle shift" (that was the factory official term for that problem)...
