700r4 speedo port not spinning at all.

MANY times, the tooth count is molded into the casting --- look and see if you can avoid counting teeth several times .... it helps.

how fast is your power window?

I wonder if I can find a conversion to manual for the rear window. New guides, new rubber, new motor, heavier wire to the window motor --- all helped, but I have to keep the engine running to be able to just push the button to make it go up. If I can coerce my wife or whomever is in the...

how fast is your power window?

The problem was that in the old days, electricity was slower - like the speed of light had to be amended about 18 years ago too. I thought everybody knew.

700r4 speedo port not spinning at all.

When we replaced the seals on these speedo-driven gear holders, we could most time stay with the old plastic gear (some are impossible to buy last time I looked) and we just put a second - new - seal on top of the old one. Be sure to put the split ring on top of the new seal though. The...

    Which clutch!?

I totally agree! I was service manager for 15 GMC or Chevy 1 1/2T to 3T tow trucks and although they had 3-finger OE clutches at first, we found that the drivers quickly got fatigued with the HD clutches and we changed them all out for Diaphragm-styles that took a lot less pressure to...

What is this relay looking module box on my valve cover??

I guess it's time for pictures --- but two of my other K5s said the same thing.

What is this relay looking module box on my valve cover??

Uhhhmmmmmmmm ... I humbly disagree. I have both front and rear swaybars and on the doorpost sticker it says it is NOT designed to carry a camper.

    Rear axle replacement

If you have the cover off - the gear count is OEM-stamped into the outer periphery of the ring and on the inside stub of the pinion. Most times, the number will appear like this ---> 33:6 or something like that. These gears are machined together and have match-marks to keep someone from...

New diff carrier bearings, anybody heard of Iljin?

I've seen the Amps go down when bearings finally get lubed. We had motors hidden in the ceiling and walls at a hospital I worked at in LA and the only way they could be found was when they emitted smoke.

    New door seals, new problems.

The striker-latch is somewhat adjustable and might correct that --- but having just done full-rubber on all my windows and doors --- I didn't have that same problem. But make sure the bushings on the door hinge pins are intact!

What is this relay looking module box on my valve cover??

That appears to be a Goodwrench replacement engine --- perhaps? The relay was originally spot welded on the old valve cover and if you did a full engine, then you just drilled and screwed it on in the same place.

What is this relay looking module box on my valve cover??

Too small for a dual battery setup. This is, at most a 10Amp relay. My '86 K5 Blazer had the same relay -- it was a CARB/CalEPA mandated relay for the EIS/EIC ... IIRC it had to do with the Diverter Valve signal from the Decel Switch for the A.I.R System and --- as on my K5 --- it didn't have...

    Gelled fuel or bad pump?

A few things come to mind --- I worked with the USN in Alaska on the diesels and had a few troubles not unlike yours. What Grade of Diesel are you running? It should be Diesel #1 per ASTM D4539. #2 will have the paraffin drop out of suspension and look like the jell you speak of ... but it's...

New diff carrier bearings, anybody heard of Iljin?

I was an expeditor for a cryogenic gasses company during 1962-3 and they had such a hard time even getting bearings (VietNam war 'n all going on at that time) that they decided to make their own! We needed them for the cryogenic pumps we made and we were going to use the bearing we would make...

Are rubber valve cover gaskets JUNK? Pic inside

I have used a lot of Mr. Gasket versions and like them a lot. Next up is FelPro cork composition as they are stable and firm enough to work for years. I have them on my '86 K5 stroker and they have needed very little retightening. Rubber --- er ---> generally sux. A few times I have used...

    Lost my rear end.

It's a few days past my self-induce deadline to put this together --- and I've had two trips to Nampa Idaho and the snow and the almost Zero temps --- which sorta-kinda has put the stopper on this project until it .... 1. Stops snowing 2. Get's considerably warmer 3. I don't have to go to...

    Rear axle replacement

"IF" being the operative here --- it doesn't always work out that they've been changed - especially when it means two gear sets. The RPO is still a good starting place. 100% of everything I've ever owned (7 K5s, 3 K1500 Sierras, 1 K40 box van, not counting a couple of Trail Blazers) have had...

    Rear axle replacement

The "gov-bomb' name comes from idiots spinning one wheel on ice or snow and the other tire on good traction. The little gears go crazy and ka-boom. I got over 150,000 miles on one of them hauling logs, jumping stumps and running in snow and ice hauling 3 cords of firewood up and down offroad...

Vacuum lines where do they go

Does it have HEI (I think so - 'cause it came out in i972-73 or so in CalEPA and CARB stats and the Feds weren't far behind. . My '86 just misses it - but I wish it had FI --- but ... no! ... and since I know your '78 doesn't have FI, you can eliminate the 4-wire connex behind the...

Vacuum lines where do they go

The HEI vacuum must get its signal from manifold vacuum - but it has to go through a thermostatic vacuum control valve first so it won't advance until the engine's warmed up sufficiently for the oxygen sensor(s) to start talking to the computer. On some small-displacement engines, there may be a...
