Went to the candy store today...no sweets today, but...

I did that with my exhaust. After I got the truck last fall, I started a list of what I wanted to replace. Headers, pipes and muffles were on the list. When the first set of headers were setting on the rack, I had them in hand. Black, 3" long tube $60. I had them in hand, and I put them back. I...

Went to the candy store today...no sweets today, but...

Ya know, I've thought about how a guy could scope out what others might need. It would be difficult to have a "santa's list" when ya walk in and then get paid for the item. The money grubbing fed has ruined electronic money transfers. 1099 my rear end! And then what happens if some cat changes...

Went to the candy store today...no sweets today, but...

Yea, it's a 2 edged sword. Either learn restraint or go home busted. Honestly, I walk out empty handed more times than scoring a find. It's the thrill of the hunt. It's like walking a rummage sale in A/C.

Went to the candy store today...no sweets today, but...

In another post I mentioned all the goodies at the local candy store (Summit Racing). And they have this "Demo" section. The Demo section is where parts that have been EITHER: purchased and rrturned. (May or may not have been bolted or tack welded on and then removed and returned. OR, Summit has...

    Hey...what's the big idea..??

This spring, thru my son-in-law, I met an old GM mechanic. Knows QJs like the back of his hand. He agreed to allow me to assist him in rebuilding my original QJ. It took about 4 hours (I'm sure I slowed him down). I had read 3 or 4 books on QJ's over the winter, and had rebuilt one before going...

    Hey...what's the big idea..??

I like Cliff's book on the QJs and he's only about a 3 hour drive from me.

    Hey...what's the big idea..??

Off the top of my head I really couldn't think of a better title...sorry. So, is there a section in here for the lovers of Quadrajets? And before ya start bashing them, yes, I am familiar with the issues they had in the early 70's. But after 74'-75' the issues were resolved. And just because a...

Whirling Sound While AC is Turned On, Matches Up With RPM

A/C off...no whine. A/C on...whine. Might be compressor or compressor bearings. If A/C on = whine, compressor is on borrowed time. Ohh, that rhymes....kewl..

Tires Plus says my Dually tires are too heavy to balance.

When I get responses from the so called, "professionals", I just look at them and say, "You must think I'm some kind of an idiot." "You might sell that snit to somebody else, but daddy didn't raise no idiot." If they are brazin enuf to try and pull crap like that, I got no problem calling them...

    It has a voice....

Oh yea, and there are a couple of rear axles there too. Diffs, Lowering kits, spindles, air bags, springs, dizzys, coil overs, instrument gauges. Radiators are all in a rack of their own. It's a freaking candy store...and a curse to live so close.

I Think they do. Not sure. But I've seen blocks, heads, intakes, carbs, oil pans, timing chain sets, and headers (obviously). I see cams, pistons, rods, tappets, rockers, clutches, and flywheels almost everytime I go. They had a couple large tubs/bins of flex plates for $10 each. Brand new...

Oh the demo rack has all the prices marked down at least 1/3. Price on box was $160.

In an effort to find a model specific user manual, I just typed in the model number on the side of the box. When the result popped up, I was rolling on the floor. I stuck a 60's Ford retro radio in my 78 C-10... Oh! The heartbreak of it all...! Naaawww...not really. I'm tickled. That radio...

The faceplate in the second photo was plastic and a tad too thick, so a thinner steel faceplate was made. I like it much better.

I usually hit Summit 2 or 3 times a week. Their "demo" racks keeps me coming back. Anything there usually starts out around 1/3 of retail price. I got my stainless headers off the rack as well as the 2-1/2" stainless pipe kit and one of the Flowmaster mufflers. Anywho, a couple days ago, feeling...

Valve cover bolts won't stay snug.

I learned a long time ago to not give a rat's rip about what folks think. When ya worry about what others think, ya only wasting brain cells.

Valve cover bolts won't stay snug.

After checking all 8 of the spreaders, I am happy to announce that the upside down bar has only one buddy back on the downside of 5-7. Strange...because, I was really paying attention when putting them on. I'm just at a loss for how I missed it. Oh well...

Valve cover bolts won't stay snug.

Aaa, yea...I did that on purpose....yea...that's it.... The instructions said to do that if you need better sealing toward the firewall....yea...that's it.... Aaa, yea....I did that just to see who's paying attention....yea.....that's it. Ok ...I goofed. But here's the really funny...

Valve cover bolts won't stay snug.

Update: Picked up a set of metal reinforced rubber vc gaskets. Also a set of spreaders and a set of locking head screws. (I had to get bolts anyway because of the spreaders.)

If I pull them heads, I'll deck them off on the mill. I'll look into the better gaskets.

Valve cover bolts won't stay snug.

Ok...valve cover bolts won't stay snugged down. Stock 78 sbc. Stock bolts, stock cover. New cork gasket. Man, I'm getting tired of leaking oil out the back of the head valve galley. And just for the record, the valve cover mating surface on the head is not a machined finish. What might the...
