    Should I trade my 73 C20 for a 1998 Suburban

Hellz yeah to no smog checks ever again. I'm pretty sure the smog check system will soon be use to start confiscating and destroying vehicles deemed "unacceptable". Basically Cash-4-Clunkers at gunpoint. I know that California wants to destroy my truck. Not having to brush up against the...

    Train wreck

Ummm.. ahhhh ... That sounds alarming. Did it fly off the car while driving, like the headlight part you mentioned above? My boss is on me to get a more reliable vehicle now that our shop moved 20 miles away. I gotta say I have a big crush on the W108/109 models. Right, my "more reliable"...

Charcoal / vapor / evap canister, how it should be set up and other information

I also want to say thanks for this writeup and discussion. On my truck, ('81 350 sbc engine) the canister was long gone. The PO had just cut the 1/4"hard tubing vapor line and squished the end shut with pliers. It was loose up front and getting clipped by the fan blades off and on. I had no...

Tailshaft / Driveshaft yoke - how far out from the housing is ok?

Thanks to all who replied so far. More info: My truck is a '73 frame and VIN, but has the dashboard, engine and transmission from an '81 Suburban. It is lowered 4.5/6, with a rear axle flip, all courtesy of the PO. The rear diff is a GM 12-bolt. The rear diff is noisy and probably needs a...

Tailshaft / Driveshaft yoke - how far out from the housing is ok?

All, I feel like my tailshaft is sticking WAAAY too far out of my 9" tailpiece on my th350c. This pic is with rear wheels on the ground, front jacked up so front wheels are just off the ground. That's 1.75" exposed. ??? )

Do I replace the '87 fuel tank that's on my 73 C10 (that has an 81 engine / drivetrain)?

That's an interesting suggestion. I don't know much about TBI systems, if you have a link to an example product, I'm interested in learning more. As I understand it, the TBI has the fuel pump down in the tank ... so I'm not sure what electronics are needed to run the fuel pump, both signal and...

Do I replace the '87 fuel tank that's on my 73 C10 (that has an 81 engine / drivetrain)?

All, As the title says, I have an 87 fuel tank, which a forum member pointed out, has baffles and is designed for fuel injection engines and in tank pumps. A standard sending unit for carb engines and mechanical fuel pumps has a float to read the fuel level, this would get down to 1/2 full...

    Hello from LA (Lower Alabama)

Y'all got some work ahead of you there, son..... All the work will go much easier if you blast Drive-by Truckers in your shop/garage all the time. Even though they are from north AL, songs like "Daddy's Cup" and "Zip City" really make the work a joy. "I got 350 heads on a 305 engine I get...

    Engine to Firewall Ground

Ideally there should be a ground strap or connection from the engine block to the firewall. There's a bolt hole drilled/tapped in a V8 block right behind the #8 cylinder for exactly this reason. Of course, getting to that location is very hard, best to have a 6-year-old kid wiggle in there to...

What are these parts called, and where can I find them?

@Dleslie212, Thanks for all the pics of your total rebuild. I have to tackle my column this weekend, while I have a full day, and the puller and pin tools, and before it come off in my hands. I probably won't take it back as far as you did since I am scared of messing with my shifter, but if...

    8-track player install

VV interested to know what make/model that r2r/8-track was. I bought an Akai/Rheem-Roberts unit that also combines open reel and 8-track, off Craigslist a few years ago. The seller was listing it for a friend -- they had a small recording studio together -- I had to point out that it also had...

    Small block starter question

UPDATE: I found the number I was looking for in an article at crankshaftcoalition that was linked in another thread: -- Torque the starter mounting bolts to 35 ft-lb https://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/wiki/Starter_motors ___________________________ Hi, I know this is a 6-month-old thread...

Starter gear sliding forward and hitting flexplate

An update to close this out.... Finding the magic words to ID the failed part for this starter was very annoying. The Internet is a dumpster fire of mis-aligned SEO (*) and YouTube shaky clickbait videos with 12 mintes of "Blair Witch Garage" nausea-inducing video with maybe a 3-second mention...

Fuel Starvation when warm at high throttle

I suspect your problem is a clogged filter/sock in the sending unit in your tank. You have to take the bed off and/or slide it back to access it, but it's worth looking in there and also swabbing the tank out with a kind of $10 "gas tank swiffer" you can get at AutoStore. BR

What have you done to your square lately??

When you install your shift indicator, please post some pictures and tips. I've tried twice, maybe I am missing some pin/bearing in my dash gauge plastic bezel, anyway #3 is in a little box under my bench seat, waiting to be a-born. BR

What have you done to your square lately??

Thanks, I have a spare in a parts box somewhere from when I left my keys sitting on the bbq grill on my balcony for 4 days. I was walking out the door to AutoStore to borrow a steering wheel puller when I thought, "one last check....." Couldn't recall if the external chrome collar was integral...

What have you done to your square lately??

Apparently some crackheads tried to steal my truck last night. This was the only real damage. Maybe they thought it was a KIA. I'm gonna hit up LMC for replacement. If anybody knows the specific part name for this, would be appreciated....

1984 C10 305 stall at low speeds, loss of power during accel

Also: Don't feel bad about writing too much! More information is always good! Even if only 20% is relevant, you don't know which 20% -- that's the whole reason you are asking for advice. Best, BR

1984 C10 305 stall at low speeds, loss of power during accel

Hi friend, I am having similar problems so I will be watching this thread. My '81 350 SBC was running great, then yesterday 4:30pm suddenly started what you described: Starts and runs OK Get on fwy or mash accelarator, bogs, slows, surge/stumble, then dies. Wondered if a fuel line had burst...

Starter gear sliding forward and hitting flexplate

Update: I thought it might be the solenoid return spring, but it seems to be the "drive assembly" itself. The starter gear will slide on the shaft an inch each way. There is a broken snap ring and a loose washer. I'll post a pic of them. Yes, I need a new starter. Here's a picture of the...

Starter gear sliding forward and hitting flexplate

Update: With better light, I see tge return spring is missing entirely! The gear just slides back and forth freely. UPDATE @; I thought there would be a spring between the starter gear and the nose of the starter, I was mistaken. I'm trying to find out the name of the internal part. Yes, I...

Starter gear sliding forward and hitting flexplate

All, I found the source of the awful clattering under my engine. After throwing forward and starting the truck, then springing back, the starter gear starts to creep forward (actually back towards rear of truck) and slides up against the spinning flywheel, making a godawful clacking. Is this...

    Engine Bay Mysteries

I feel ya'. The second thing I thought when I popped the hood on my '73 C10 (*) was, "what are all these loose wires?" (**) Have you foud the wiring diagrams here at the site? They are SUPER hard to read. Here's what I did (partially, I haven't done this for all the documents...) Get or...

Help with sudden engine knocking and clanking

Well, jacking her up and getting under there, it sounds like my starter is contacting the flexplate, making the terrible clacking. So starter would need to move forward, towards the radiator, about 1mm. I've read the threads here on these problems. I'll try to get a pic of my clearance betw...
