Ethanol varnish residue: Carb vs EFI

The biggest issue is that GM rates their engines at the crank. The dodge ratings were at the wheels. Backed up by dyno numbers... you can look at both the Mopar and HHR forums for confirmation on that. The SRT-4 in 2004 and 2005 were 2.4l or 146 cu. in. Stock setup was 230hp(likely 250-260hp...

Ethanol varnish residue: Carb vs EFI

Its a respectable HP/CI... but nowhere near the best. It used the Cobalt SS motor and had the same power rating which was 260hp. The competitors at the time were the Neon SRT-4 and WRX STI's which were making the same or better power, but with a 2.4 or 2.5L I-4. My 2005 SRT-4 was rated at...

"Overheating" --> Now Fuel Delivery Issue --> Dirty Tank?

Yes and no. Vapor lock happens before the pump... where there is a vacuum being pulled by the pump. The vacuum being pulled by the pump pulls the boiling point down very low and causes vapor bubbles in the line that the pump can't move. A three line pump will constantly move a large volume of...

Sure did, he was a good dude. Loved his shop class and he was very passionate about it. Both myself and my brother-in-law went through his auto shop class either as students or assistants for the whole 4 years we were at AVHS and we both wen into professional mechanics in one way or another...

Ethanol varnish residue: Carb vs EFI

Yeah, pretty much the only thing I CAN'T get is ethanol content greater than 10% easily around me. I have several stations with a few minute drive where I can get ethanol free premium and we have several VP stations that have various race gas flavors. I work at the airport and have access to AV...

Ethanol varnish residue: Carb vs EFI

They weren't blending it into regular fuel in the 70's. You didn't have any benefit with the poor efficiency and low compression ratios of the engines either. It wasn't until the 2000's that it started to become more prevalent.

Advice and Parts recommendations for some 6.2 cam/valvetrain work?

I also figured out that the stock L92 cam is -12 degrees advanced at the docked position. The TSP cams are 7 degrees advanced at the docked position(hence the mechanical stop that keeps them from having more than 20 degrees of movement). I'm still trying to wrap my head around what effect that...

Ethanol varnish residue: Carb vs EFI

Yes and no. Almost all modern engines are very high compression relatively speaking. An ethanol blend will actually allow you to get better fuel mileage up to about 30-40% blend due to the cooling and octane increasing effects that it has, assuming you have the proper engine management tuning to...

Definitely one of the only classes I liked when I was in school. I did auto shop freshman year and then was a TA for it the rest of the three years I was at AVHS. Its terrible they closed the program at QHHS, did they close it all district wide? A&P's are in high demand right now... at least up...

Advice and Parts recommendations for some 6.2 cam/valvetrain work?

Yeah, no problem. My wife just drove it to Idaho and is on her way back. I've just got the cruise and low RPM/low throttle portions of the tune somewhat dialed in and she is averaging ~15MPG.. which is pretty decent for 4.10's, 32" tires, and a 6400lb brick. I think once i get the EOIT adjusted...

    Rpm’s at Hwy speeds

I'd find a way to check the tach against a know source. Maybe get yourself a new tach, but it is an awful huge coincidence that by confirming you do in fact have a 700R4 and 3.08 gearing... the RPM the tach is reading EXACTLY lines up with what it would read if it is in 3rd gear. It's...

New to this: Rear end alignment?

probably an issue with the alignment in the front that shows on all four tires due to tire rotations.

The bottom of the pan... so that we can see what model it is. Does that partial VIN stamped in the rail match the truck? If it does, you can also verify by looking at the RPO's listed on the SPID sheet inside the glovebox or on the fenderwell.

    Rpm’s at Hwy speeds

Yep, that checks out. 3->4 shift at 3100rpm would drop you right at 65mph and 2170RPM assuming a 6% converter slip. If it stays that way though... you probably aren't getting converter lockup. With the converter locked it should drop you down to ~2030RPM. Converter unlocked: Converter locked:

    Rpm’s at Hwy speeds

Here's an easy test comparison. If you DO have a 700R4, here is an easy light throttle shift schedule for a 3.08 ratio above and a 4.56 ratio below. See which one looks like what your truck is doing. As you can see.. the amount of engine RPM lost at the shift is going to tell you the...

    Rpm’s at Hwy speeds

This is what the shift drop in RPM should look like for a 700R4. Standard converter slip is usually less than 10%, so if your "4th gear shift" around 2400RPM is only ~200-300 RPM, its the converter locking... not a shift. 3->4 shift should be dropping 1000rpm or so depending on where your RPM is...

    Rpm’s at Hwy speeds

Or just zip the diff cover off and check like numerous others have stated. Every single bit of information you have provided points to you having 3.08's and not being in OD though. Whether that is from you not having a 700R4 installed or from there being another issue remains to be seen. Is...

    Rpm’s at Hwy speeds

100% not... unless you have 4.56's... which you would DEFINITELY not be able to confuse for 3.08's. Take a picture of your transmission pan and post it here. Go out and drive your truck and record the speed and RPM of every shift. You can calculate the gear ratio from those numbers. I bet you...

    Rpm’s at Hwy speeds

Yeah, its called a 700R4 :) I think you are thinking of the 350C, which is a TH350 with a lockup converter. I bet the converter is locking in 3rd gear and the OP is confusing that for the 4th gear shift.
  20. Bextreme04

    Rpm’s at Hwy speeds

If you are at 2400 RPM, you are not in OD. Are you sure its a 700R4 and not a TH350? 84 would have been a very early one, would not be uncommon for someone to junk it and go to a "more reliable" TH350.

    Rpm’s at Hwy speeds

Have you counted the shifts to make sure you are getting all the gears? The 700R4 has a pretty good spread, so you should be able to feel/hear each shift pretty distinctly. That RPM is suspiciously exactly what you would get for your rear gear and tire size without an overdrive. Shifting into...

Advice and Parts recommendations for some 6.2 cam/valvetrain work?

Well, they were definitely not torqued. I got the trans pulled back enough on some 4.5" long bolts threaded into the bellhousing and removed, loctited, then properly torqued the bolts in. Horrible grinding clunking sound is completely gone. I had quite a big oil leak from the oil galley plug...

1992 RS Camaro. First car for Der Burger.

Interesting, maybe it was just the IROC that got the TPI with the 305? Or maybe it was a later year that they switched over... I'd say you guys got a great deal at the $2600!

1992 RS Camaro. First car for Der Burger.

I've been thinking about a 3rd gen for a beater race car for a while. I've got the aluminum Gen IV 5.3 from my suburban that needs a home and they are great platforms. Paint looks pretty rough for that price point, but if it is in solid mechanical condition and rust free with a decent interior...
