Whirling Sound While AC is Turned On, Matches Up With RPM

The truck sounds totally normal until the AC is engaged then immediately fast clicking(whirling). The compressor looks completely normal and functional. No visible signs externally like heat changing the metal. Nothing looks loose or off. Is it OK to drive the truck without turning the AC on...

    question about gmc vs chevy

Damn y'all. They are both cool as ****. My first ride was a GMC....Safari van so, I didn't really link together that it was better than a Chevy, I just knew that it was sister to Chevy. Eventually I had a Chevy S 10 and now I have my 87 Silverado. GMC is awesome and always has been. Both are...

Whirling Sound While AC is Turned On, Matches Up With RPM

I got it. My buddy helped me adjust the v belt. I posted about it after this one here. It still is making the noise and belt doesn't touch the bracket now.

Whirling Sound While AC is Turned On, Matches Up With RPM

Tightened the V belt with my buddy. The sound is still there when AC is turned on. The belt does not get anywhere close to the bracket anymore at least. Possible that it is low on freon or the compressor needs to be replaced. Maybe I just turn the radio up louder. My drivers power window started...

Whirling Sound While AC is Turned On, Matches Up With RPM

So optimistically I approached knocking this out. It seemed to make sense. I see the 1/2 square hole. I loosened the sliding bolt slightly and what I thought would be the pivot bolt(bottom back) so it could pivot when I pryed the whole bracket over slightly. I could not tell what to pry against...

Whirling Sound While AC is Turned On, Matches Up With RPM

It does seem a little bit frayed. I was not even thinking or looking for the belt slapping something. I have just been staring at the compressor and the clutch the whole time. Watching my video back, it definitely is loose more than just running and flops out noticeably when the AC gets turned...

Ok. So possibly I just need to adjust the bracket and get a new serpentine eh? Re- watching my vid....

Whirling Sound While AC is Turned On, Matches Up With RPM

Seems it may be just in the clutch? Sounds like the rings in the clutch are banging in to each other doesn’t it. @TX87R10 your last info inspired me to look for something obvious. Nothing seems loose like a bolt or bolts are missing. Entire compressor? just the clutch? Maybe this clip will call...

Whirling Sound While AC is Turned On, Matches Up With RPM

So I decided I was going to get AC Delco or "GM Parts" from Rock Auto. I saw a couple YToob videos on replacing compressors...trying to find one specific to 1987 is not so easy. Anyway, looking through the service manual and catching a few heads ups from install info, it looks like a bit more...

I need an AC compressor I'm afraid. Discount rack price for a good one would be nice.

Whirling Sound While AC is Turned On, Matches Up With RPM

It *** supposed to rain all day here but only for a few hours in the late afternoon. I managed to pop the hood and idle the truck then turnt the AC on and off. Definitely coming from the compressor or the compressor clutch. Now battling my inner thoughts as to when and which compressor to...

Whirling Sound While AC is Turned On, Matches Up With RPM

Literally only when AC is on is the sound present. When no AC everything sounds normal.

Whirling Sound While AC is Turned On, Matches Up With RPM

Ok...are you saying I need to remove the AC compressor while the engine is on and plug in the alternator plug to it????

Whirling Sound While AC is Turned On, Matches Up With RPM

So is it possible an adjustment can be made or should I anticipate replacing the compressor?

Whirling Sound While AC is Turned On, Matches Up With RPM

I just had an initial feeling it was in the timing chain, sorry not belt. I said that because I was thinking about the serpentine belt running around the compressor.

Whirling Sound While AC is Turned On, Matches Up With RPM

My first instincts tell me that this has something to do with the compressor in the timing belt. It seems to echo through the exhaust when the AC is on. When the AC is off it sounds normal. Any info will help. Currently I am looking through the service manual trying to pin point where to start...

Whirling Sound While AC is Turned On, Matches Up With RPM

Recently while driving I had my AC on and it started to make a low volume whirrling sound that increases and decreases with the revs in acceleration and deceleration. Still blowing ice cold. When the hood is open it definitely sounds like it is timing belt related. Is this the sign of something...

    1987 Silverado fuel issue

From what I understand the guages are negative reads so it is disconnected or a ground is out if it is beyond maxed out.

Fascinated but can't follow! It all seems so crazy once you start digging in. Running on passenger tank only and one day hope to use both again.... -Sam:confused:
