Have i decoded this VIN correctly????

'82 VIN card. We used to carry these around in our pockets. I don't know why. I guess if we had a particularly bothersome VIN we needed to decode while in the bathroom or something. 2GCEC14C1 = 2 = Canadian built G = General Motors C = Chevrolet E= 6000-7000 GVW C= conventional cab 1= 1/2...

Have i decoded this VIN correctly????

2GCEC14C1C1216200 Ok - so the serial portion of the VIN is the last six digits: 216200. The "1" in the space prior to that is for the Oshawa assembly plant The "C" in front of that is for the 1982 model year (ie, A= 1980, B=1981, C=1982). That's all from memory. Give me a sec to find a...

Have i decoded this VIN correctly????

Not on the side; top of the top flange only. You would need a mirror to see it. K

Rear wheels are sucked in way more than front. K10. Adapters? BAD IDEA? pics inside

Nope. The change was made years before the lawsuit(s). Be reminded it takes 3-4 years for a minor redo; 8-10 years for a major architectural redesign. K

Thank you - I did feel like I had to get that off my chest, nonetheless, for posterity. K

Rear wheels are sucked in way more than front. K10. Adapters? BAD IDEA? pics inside

I feel like I should share this at some point: I've been accused of making it sound like I was "everywhere all at once" back then and I don't want it to give that impression. I've been thinking about writing a thread about "How I got so Smart", or something like that, but in a nutshell: it's...

Rear wheels are sucked in way more than front. K10. Adapters? BAD IDEA? pics inside

Here's the thing about doing different generations of vehicles: When the current version came out it was billed as the greatest thing since sliced bread. So any change you make as a manufacturer has to be "better" than before. And then better again. And then better yet again. At best - It's...

Rear wheels are sucked in way more than front. K10. Adapters? BAD IDEA? pics inside

This actually happens alot. My beloved bride - who knows everything (just ask her) and I were driving on Phoenix's Apache Trail up to Roosevelt Dam. It's miles and miles of dirt road and was pretty dusty, so I reached down and put the HVAC system on "max" so it would recirc the inside air...

Rear wheels are sucked in way more than front. K10. Adapters? BAD IDEA? pics inside

I know the guy. Ed Pauly was the suspension engineer for the squarebody trucks. We lived in the same small town during our time on the program, so we had a lot of nice visits. I'm not speculating. If I was I would say so, but a lot of squarebody history I don't have to speculate on (like...

Rear wheels are sucked in way more than front. K10. Adapters? BAD IDEA? pics inside

It was for traction, so that the front tires and rear tires were tracking in fresh material (snow or sand). K

    Roof lights

RPO U01 is correct. They were a free flow option on any truck, but required on any vehicle over 80 inches wide. So - required on duallys and some K30 single wheels (because the front hubs would stick out past the 80 inches). K

1982 GMC - What do I have? What can I tow?

We used to carry these around in our pocket: LINK:https://gsitlc.ext.gm.com/dealerworld/vincards/ I agree that the VIN provided checks out for a 82 3/4 ton GMC, K truck, built in Flint. K

1982 GMC - What do I have? What can I tow?

If it is a factory dually then it's a one ton. No 3/4 ton duallys from GM. K

1982 GMC - What do I have? What can I tow?

Do you still have the SPID label in the glovebox? Does the VIN on the SPID match the truck? All trucks get the camper loading label, even my baby C10 short box. K

    Hood latch

This is what we had in the assembly plant. Like a slim jim, only horizontal. They used them if a cable broke, was not hooked up originally, or the hood fitter used them so he could repeatedly open and close the hood without having to walk around to the door. K

I think my wife did that. She was cleaning everything. I had to stop her before she immersed my Lionel train engine! K

    Bolt pattern adapter

Good point, but in my case I went from a 15x8 truck rally wheel (zero offset) to a 15 x 8 Corvette rally wheel (zero offset), so it was pretty much a straight add. K

Plus - they move the tire/wheel assembly outboard a bit, which changes the load on the wheel/axle bearings and can cause unusual tire wear. K

    Front End Sheet Metal Assembly

Some plants did "buck build" where the front end is assembled ahead of time and then brought to the line as a unit. It really depended on what was en vogue at the time and what management wanted. When I started at Flint: Line 1 was piecemeal, as I have described and Line 2 was buck built...

    Front End Sheet Metal Assembly

The way we did it in the plant: Radiator support is sitting on the frame rails, loose (flopping fore/aft). Fenders are installed one at a time, with wheel liner/inner fender already installed. After front end is on, install the hood. Scoot the radiator support cross car to fit the gaps...
