What new tools have you got lately?

Had been interested in getting a gantry crane since I have been renting my shop, with my upcoming ram rebuild, I decided to finally pull the trigger on one. Went with the 4000lb Strongway from Northern Tool. Definitely not a Vestil or other commercial unit, but for the price I think it will...

    Rock Auto Discount Codes

Not sure if it applies in Canada, but in the US if you ship to a commercial/business address, it drops the shipping costs enough to make a difference. My latest order, shipping was about $120 to my house, to my dad’s work, ~$95. The other benefit is the carriers drop off before lunch typically...

1980 C10 Running but weird to stop

Sounds like you are experiencing dieseling. What does the truck have for a carburetor? Quadrajet? Carter/Edelbrock, Holley? What is the base timing at? Late timing (retarded) will require the throttle blades to be open more (idle screw) to bring idle up. When the throttle blades are open...

What have you done to your square lately??

So far it seems fine, I was running 15-40, decided to try the VR1 because it has the zinc/additives in it. They offer it in two options for multi weight. 10-30 and 20-50. 10-30 is a little thinner than I’d really like, especially for summertime. If 15-40 was an option I’d use that. My friend...

What have you done to your square lately??

The alternator in the 76 decided to not want to charge, swapped it for a 10si I had on the shelf from the junkyard. When I get time I'll look into the 12si I pulled off it and see what decided to call it quits. Changed the oil too, decided to try VR1 20-50 since it has the zinc needed in it.

    Beginner Alternator Question

I’m not sure I’ve seen anything but a center offset mounting ears on Gm alternators. If you go to a parts store, tell them is for an 84 Z28 Camaro with 305, that should produce a 12si with correct clocking of the terminals. Regular production 12si alternators can be spotted as the fan is...

    Beginner Alternator Question

I’ll echo what others have said, a 12si is a good upgrade for these trucks, both of mine run them. When I got one for the 79, I went with a Powermaster as at the time (may still be that way) a reman from the local auto parts stores was almost the same in price as the new one from Powermaster...

    OIL

3000-5000 depending on driving. Lots of short trips closer to three, nice highway driving getting things nice and up to temp I have no issues with 5000. Quality air filter, working pcv system all help keep oil cleaner. I also always run the larger oil filters (used on medium duty’s) and always...

    HOW GEAR OIL?

80W-90 GL5 is what I have in my 79 and the 14b sf I built for a friend. Both have Yukon Dura-grips in them and that is what they recommend.

    HOW GEAR OIL?

The fill plug on those covers are not to be used as a level plug. The original fill/level plug is to be removed, and filled until fluid comes out of the hole in the housing, not the cover. Instructions from B&M

    AFR GAUGE addition?

Generally there is no need to run dual O2 sensors. You certainly could add a bung on each bank, but a good average from just one bank is sufficient. It would be best to verify with the specific gauge/sensor, 6-12” from the collector flange is generally what I have done and seems to work fine.

Biggest jobs you have completed in the shortest amount of time.

I’d say for me is getting my Dart back on the road. I purchased it October 30th 2020, it had sat since 2015 or 16 (when the owner passed) at a minimum. Thinking that may have been closer to 10 years. New fuel system from tank to carb, rebuilt front suspension, converting to later A body disc...
