I think I may have bent push rods--and other issues (76 GMC W/455 Olds). Crap.

Oldsmobile distributors turn the opposite direction because the distributor gear is on the other side of the camshaft. No need for a fancy oil priming tool with a Olds. All that’s needed is a 1/4 drive extension and a 5/16 socket. Just be sure to tape the socket to the extension!!! Somewhere...

I think I may have bent push rods--and other issues (76 GMC W/455 Olds). Crap.

Pull the oil filter, cut it open. If there is any cam wear the debris will be in the oil filter. Oldsmobile (like many other engines of those years) have non adjustable valvetrain. Meaning assuming the valve job is done correctly, the distance from the cam to rocker arm hasn’t changed from...

    Voltage issues

Carefully inspect the battery cables. They can be corroded inside the insulation where it’s hard to see. If the battery load tests hood, before spending another dime do a simple voltage drop test. Get a voltmeter, put the positive probe of the meter on the positive post of the battery. Put...

    Power estimate, mildly modded 305?

Whatever the number is, you will want more. Just a fact of life for a gearhead.

    Mystery harness?

Cruise control. That end of the harness plugs into the cruise module, the hose connects to the brake pedal vacuum switch.

700R4 Lockup Torque converter control issues solved

You can get converters with lock up capabilities far beyond 2500rpm, just depends on the budget. The problem with high stall converters is as stall speed goes up, converter diameter usually goes down. As a result, the lockup clutch gets smaller, and torque capacity goes down. You can get small...

rebuild 700r4 or 4180e for my carb-350 sbc

The electrical connector is for the converter clutch. It has no effect of shift characteristics other than the lockup converter. If it won’t move at all, most likely something happened with the pump, or the input shaft is torn out of the input housing. Usually the shrapnel from the pump can be...

    454 stumbles at 2500 rpm

Most vacuum gauges also have a scale for fuel pressure. Tee the vacuum gauge into the fuel line so you can monitor fuel pressure. Engine vacuum should stay fairly constant at steady cruise. If the vacuum drops off rapidly while the engine stumbles (at steady throttle) that’s a symptom of a...

    454 stumbles at 2500 rpm

Rig up a cheap vacuum/fuel pressure gauge to the fuel line ahead of the carb. Tape the gauge to the windshield so you can see it while driving. If it maintains pressure, it’s time to start looking at ignition components. If it doesn’t, inspect the fuel line. Check for kinks, rusty lines, split...

    454 stumbles at 2500 rpm

The cause is simple and obvious, it has a Holley on it. The solution? Put a Q-Jet on it!!! Your problem sounds like fuel delivery. Before spending too much time on it, remove the fuel cap. If that fixes the problem, the tank Indy venting. You can’t pull fuel out without letting some air in...

    TH 350 shift issues

Regardless of what people say, there is nothing wrong with changing fluid in a perfectly functional transmission. It’s just good preventative maintenance. I doubt that will solve your problem. I doubt you even HAVE a problem to solve. After sitting a few days, the fluid in the torque converter...

    700R4 Swap

I believe there is a gate in the column that’s different between 3 and 4 speed transmissions. If I remember correctly, the gate isn’t for each gear, it’s the detent for reverse. I think the spacing between park and neutral is different with a 4 speed trans verses 3 speed, which also moves...

Seeking carburetor guidance, vacuum vs mechanical secondary

I’m not real familiar with edelbrock carbs. I’m sure with a little patience you can improve the performance. Before doing anything, contact Edelbrock and find out exactly what metering rod, jets, power springs, etc are suppose to be in the carb. Get it back to factory specs before attempting...

Seeking carburetor guidance, vacuum vs mechanical secondary

It sounds like whoever is working on the truck wants you to pay for his lack of knowledge or ambition. With some reading comprehension and basic troubleshooting skills, you should be able to improve the way the truck runs with what is there. It’s hard to beat a well tuned Q-Jet on the street...

    towing rig

That’s the story I have heard as well, I guess the theory is compressing air without the fuel creates more heat than injecting fuel into a engine under a light load. On the flip side of that theory, I worked at a Cadillac dealership when the Northstar engine was first released. One of the...

    TH 350 shift issues

How easy is it to duplicate? If it’s an occasional thing, a little detective work on your part could help. If it’s fairly easy to get the trans to act up, have them drive it or have someone ride with you until it does act up. If it happens pretty regularly or is easy to duplicate, the shop...

rebuild 700r4 or 4180e for my carb-350 sbc

It depends on what your future plans are. Do you have plans for major engine upgrades? You can build a 700 to take some abuse, but the major upgrades are expensive. Big tires? Do you plan to beat on the truck? Once again, a built 700 will whimper at power levels and abuse that a 4L80 can...

    Getting my 700R4 rebuilt

I personally don’t care for the 86 and earlier cores. In typical GM fashion, they release a turd (think of the Cadillac 4100, the Olds 350 diesel, the first design 700 trans, the first couple years 440T4 transaxle, the list goes on) and continually improve it until it’s basically perfected, then...

    towing rig

Kinda off the subject of the original content of this thread, but relevant to the current discussion: I have also never had issues starting my diesels in the cold. I spent a week in Minnesota on a snowmobile trip, the warmest it got that entire week was 12 below zero. That is ACTUAL temp, not...

    Getting my 700R4 rebuilt

That’s the easiest way to identify the latest model. The next upgrade was the 4L60E, meaning no TV cable, shift solenoids, electronic pressure control, etc. However, the internals for the most part remained the same.

    700r4, gas to diesel difference

Install a diesel specific converter and governor. A TransGo shift kit would be a good durability improvement. Make sure the TV cable iscorrrct (close is NOT good enough!!) and make sure the converter lockup works. If your working it, install a hood oil cooler.

    towing rig

The wait to start light on my 06 is temperature dependent. If it’s warmer than 60 degrees, light doesn’t come on. The colder it is, the longer the light is on. I have caught my wife starting the truck immediately in temperatures when I know damn well the light will be on. She says she...

speculate on a noise from rear end - turns out it's a tranny problem

Drop the pan, see if there is any major debris. Put a magnet in the pan, assuming it doesn’t already have one. You probably have a planetary gearset of bearing that’s noisy. It could be a sign of bad things coming, or you may get lucky and it will last for a few more years.
