    Fuel guage bounces?

I wouldn’t be opposed to replacing the fuel gauge if it fixes the issue. Since the truck was originally diesel powered, i swapped in a standard fuel gauge to replace the one that said “diesel fuel only”. I didn’t realize GM changed the coloring and font on the lettering until I was ready to...

    Fuel guage bounces?

I seem to recall reading about a fix for this. My wife drove the square for the first time yesterday. After getting out she asked what the deal was with the fuel gauge? It does bounce, a lot! It’s been like that for as long as I can remember. It’s not unusual for it to bounce from 1/4 to...

    Jack ideas?

Ever have one of those days where you just want to crawl back into bed and hope tomorrow is better? Long story, hopefully you find it amusing. Had to drive the square to work last Wednesday. I’m not sure if I ran over something or if the tire just failed, but it went flat immediately. Lucky...

    700R4 Hard/Delayed 1-2 shift

If you decide to mess with the govenor, I’d suggest getting a spare one to experiment with. That way if you screw something up you have a known good one to go back to. Take detailed notes, make one change at a time. Depending on how picky you are with shift points, you might be done in a...

    Th400 orange wire

The trans will tend to “short shift” at WOT without it. Meaning if you stand on it at low speeds, the trans will automatically upshift far earlier than you would want it to. Besides this inconvenience and the no kickdown, that’s the only disadvantage.

    TH400--Steel Transmission Lines VS Flexible

Reproduction factory cooler lines are pretty cheap. While they aren’t as cheap as bending your own, what’s your time worth? I used Teflon lined flexible hose on my Olds. If I had to do it over again I’d probably use hydraulic hose. Whatever you use, just remember the cooler line fittings are...

    Where to get quadrajet rebuilt?

Cliff doesn’t rebuild carbs anymore, he retired building. He does sell parts. Before doing anything, buy cliffs book. He describes a procedure for verifying the needle/seat actually seals, and if it doesn’t how to fix it. If the needle has a slight leak, it’s possible the float bowl can slowly...

    Light socket replacement

I would think that’s the way it needs to be wired. Easy enough to verify. Ground the black wire, apply power to the yellow then tan. One of those wire will power a filament noticeably brighter than the other. That wire will be the brake/turn wire.

Passing CA Smog help - High HCs

I don’t have anything useful to add to this discussion, other than my Random Thought. Personally, it’s my opinion what comes out of the tailpipe is what matters. If you can tune to Top Fuel engine well enough to pass the emissions requirements, great! In other words, leave the hood closed. If...

    Running new taillight harness?

Dark green and yellow are you left and right turn signal AND brake lights. Their function is split up in the turn signal switch. Brown is the taillights, light green is reverse lamps. And all of those individual bulbs needs a good ground. Before investing a bunch of time in the project...

    hei vacuum advance stop plate

Read this: https://www.460ford.com/threads/timing-vacuum-advance-101-good-article-by-gm-engineer.117504/ Delco made a BUNCH of different advance plates and different weights, and dozens of different springs to calibrate their distributors for different applications. Obviously , a corvette or...

Not using factory fuse box after engine swap, lighting wiring with column and ignition switch problems.

The nice thing about GM is they have used the same basic wire colors for certain functions since the 50s. This is a screenshot of a factory wiring diagram for a 72 Olds. I’m 99.9 percent sure these colors will match your trucks turn signal switch.

TH350 dipstick tube and dipstick for a TH400???

If you can’t find a aftermarket part that checks off all your boxes, make your own!! It sounds like you already have a good tube with the desired boot style seal for the case. Now you need a dipstick that locks and will give you an accurate reading. Drop the transmission pan. Install your...

Not using factory fuse box after engine swap, lighting wiring with column and ignition switch problems.

Power comes into the truck on 2-3 heavy gauge red wires. One goes to the headlight switch and other items that are powered at all times, the other goes to the ignition switch. The ignition switch splits the power up by function. I don’t have any manuals handy, but I do remember an orange, brown...

    Converting Diesel Wiring to Gas

It’s been years since I converted mine. If I remember correctly, the wiring for the diesel engine ran thru a firewall connector very close to the drivers side valve cover. The heavy gauge pink wire in went to the fuel cutoff solenoid, I used that to power the HEI. I unplugged the firewall...

    What is this wire?

Find the nuetral safety switch at the base of the column. Look for the connector with a yellow and purple wire. Yellow is crank trigger from the ignition switch, purple is the starter crank feed. Make absolutely SURE the transmission is in park, jumper the purple wire to battery power. If the...

    What is this wire?

Try starting it in neutral. If that doesn’t work, make sure your foot is firmly on the brake, hold the key in the crank position, and slowly move the shifter thru the gears. If it cranks, the switch isn’t adjusted correctly.

    Power window/lock/mirror Frankenstein conversion??

I made harnesses for the power windows and door locks. All of that works as expected and very well. Of course, once the truck was finished my son decided he wanted keyless entry. why couldn’t he have thought of that will we were building the harnesses?? I have tried a different mirror switch...

    Throwing Parts at the Wall

The fast idle start is designed into the calibration. GM programmed the PROM that way to ensure the O2 sensor and catalytic converter heats up as quickly as possible. I’d start with cleaning the IAC bore and pintle. I remember seeing an extra pair of wires (besides the common purple and green...

    TH400 Information Thread

I have been searching for the unique 1-2 modulator valvetrain setup for my car to duplicate the automatic 3-1 downshift. As many high performance transmission builders there are, I have no doubt a bunch get thrown away when machining stock valve bodies for transbrake and reverse manuals. I’d be...

    TH400 Information Thread

The OW and BB calibration (I wouldn’t be surprised to find Pontiac and Chevy had their own codes for basically the same transmission) used a unique valve body, a 6 clutch direct drum with no wave plate, and probably a specific govenor. Some of this is outlined in the factory service manual, some...

    Need help settling a debate

Check the wires on the pickup coil. The constant back and forth movement of the vacuum advance will bend the tiny wires and cause intermittent no spark. The engine will continue to run, just load up cylinder’s with fuel. When spark is returned the fuel ignites with a bang.
