    Strange square holes in case...

Here is a brand new case cast by ATI for drag racing. You can see the hole in the same place.

    Strange square holes in case...

Crap, I forgot to take the picture. If that’s the only concern, then go head with the overhaul. Lots of cases have holes cast into them that look just like what you are seeing. Aluminum is expensive, they don’t put any more into the case than is absolutely needed.

    Strange square holes in case...

That’s just a drain hole. They are cast that way. I have a th350 torn apart on my bench, I’ll take a pic when I get home from work.

Haynes manual suggest silicone dielectric grease for ignition module?

I’m pretty sure it’s mentioned in the factory manual to use thermal paste. I’m sure the book says to use GM part number whatever, but whatever it’s called it’s a heat transfer paste.

    CUCV Torque Slip (TH400)

I forgot about the diesel governor!! When I swapped the 455 Olds in place of the blown up 350 Olds diesel on the first test drive I noticed immediately it shifted way too early. I think the shift points were around 3500-3800, it definitely made for a sluggish WOT. I swapped in a “mystery” gov...

    CUCV Torque Slip (TH400)

They will physically interchange, it’s the internal pump/turbine/stator combination that is the problem. The torque curve between a gas and diesel engine is completely different, a really tight diesel converter won’t be fun behind a gas engine.

    CUCV Torque Slip (TH400)

Get a remanufactured converter for your truck with the gas engine. The stall speed will be all wrong for the engine, especially if the engine has some go fast parts. The diesel engines have a low rpm torque curve, the factory converter is tailored to that. The gas engine will definitely not...

Haynes manual suggest silicone dielectric grease for ignition module?

Thermal paste is NOT dielectric grease! Dielectric grease is designed to seal connections from moisture, and to allow easy disassembly. Thermal paste is designed to help transfer heat. In my 35 years of driving, I have had 2 modules fail. One would quit once the engine got hot, the other...

    700r4 problems

In theory it should go to first in fist gear and shift as you move the lever. I’ll be honest, I have never tried it in a 700. I have done several poor man manual valve body’s with 350/400 transmissions, so the theory is sound. I’d try to drive it a little aggressively, and see if it will...

    700r4 problems

Will it back up? If not, I bet you will find it has no overdrive either. If you have no reverse, 2nd, or 4th, most likely the drive shell is broken. Fairly common issue. The Sonnax drive shell is about 125 bucks. It does require transmission removal, and almost complete disassembly. However, if...

No brake, running, reverse nor tail lights! Help!

If I remember correctly, the taillight harness feed is the smallest of the connectors at the firewall electrical connector. Since you said basically nothing works at the back of the truck, start there. Turn on the headlights, use a test light to backprobe the brown wire. Hopefully you have...

    Switches

With a truck that old, and lots of previous owners and modifications, who knows what it was for? For all you know, whatever the switch controlled might be long gone. If you really want to know, carefully trave each wire until you find what it’s connected to. The problem with that approach is...

    Voltage Drop

First things first, do a simple voltage drop test. Put the POSITIVE probe of your meter on the charge stud of the alternator. Put the NEGATIVE probe on the POSITIVE post of the battery. Start the engine, turn on anything electrical. Read your meter, whatever the meter reads is the amount of...

    Lokar Case Mount Shifter

That looks like what was in the S-10. I had a B&M mega shifter in a 85 cutlass, it worked pretty well. That’s the limit of my experience with B&M. Hurst makes kick ass shifter. It’s hard to beat a Quarter stick.

    1984 4L80E conversion what parts?

Ok, the 675hp/715 torque numbers change things, I’ll revise my statement!! With that kind of power, but once, cry once, put a 4L80 in it. For the money it’s going to cost to build a 4L60 to handle that power you could use a 4L80 and have money left over. You can supposedly build a 700 to...

    Lokar Case Mount Shifter

If the shifter you’re talking about has the sheetmetal bracket that uses the round holes on the side of the case, and 2 extension housing bolts, use something else!!! I did a sbc/4L60 swap on a 99 S-10, the owner bought that shifter. I didn’t like it at all. Very vague as to what gear it’s...

    1984 4L80E conversion what parts?

I know nothing about transfer cases, so I can’t help there. A 700 and a 4L60E are the same length. To the best of my knowledge, all the 4x4 output shafts have the same spline. I don’t know for a fact if there are different length shafts for different transfer cases. I do know corvettes use a...

4L60e Torque Converter in a Bind

The rule of thumb is 1/8 to 3/16 inch of converter pullout. In other words, with the converter buried in the pump as far as it will go, you should have 1/8-3/16 gap between the mounting tabs and the flexplate. You can usually get away with a little more than 3/16, but ideally you should use some...

Increased Cooling with Electric Fan and Electric Water Pump

Make sure ALL the factory baffles/shrouding is around the radiator and core support. Make sure the shroud fits tight up against the radiator. Any airflow that can go around the radiator instead of thru it is wasted air. Before wasting too much time and money on this, make sure it’s actually...

4L60e Torque Converter in a Bind

Next time, slowly tighten the bellhousing bolts, stopping every few turn to make sure the converter spins freely. Anytime the converter locks or binds, you need to stop and find out why.

4L60e Torque Converter in a Bind

Don’t start it, it’s almost a certainty the converter slipped out of the pump while installing it. The pump rotor is junk. Right now all you will need is a rotor, start it you will need a pump, converter and most likely a complete overhaul to get the shrapnel out.

Have you tried going leaner on the pump shot? Just a thought. I’m sure there are ways to tailor the accelerator pump to almost any engine.

Whats you gas mileage on your squarebody truck?

I wouldn’t call 16 stupid good, but for a big block truck I think that’s pretty respectable. My dad is almost 75, he drives like a typical 75 year old, he has gotten 17 before. It’s a stock 71 455, 3.08 gears and a TH350C trans.
