What have you done to your square lately??

I agree, almost 100%. A lot of “issue” with things is perception and reasonably enough, a group like us here are more old school than new, so there’s that. The other part is cheap schitty replacement parts that don’t last. That said, idk what the problem is with SRT8 radiators but they DO suck...

    Filling in seams

Picture time. If it’s truly up to 1/8” off, that’s a lot. I checked my trucks and one of them is not perfect, maybe 1/16. The other is pretty nuts on. I never considered smoothing those lines anyway. IMO it’s part of the truck. On a similar note, @Doppleganger, I know you have frustrations...

A very expensive and dumb mistake (update I was wrong)

Yes but that’s less than an inch offset so effectively less than half inch offset in the driveshaft. If the OP pic is 100% correct, it’s off by about 2”. Seems excessive to me too. However at this point I would 100% bolt it up and send it and see how it feels and if good, see how long it lasts...

    Mud Tires

Cool. PS those vintage mud flaps have some value. Some were reproduced. WA and MT aren’t afaik.

    Mud Tires

Shoot, that truck is rust free for the salt belt! Beautiful rig! What part of Cheeseland you in? Cooper Evolution MTs are a good mid price range mudder.

What have you done to your square lately??

There’s something satisfying about the notion of an old vehicle just lighting off with a few pumps on the gas pedal and…. Vroom. The old 74 CJ could sit for 2 hours or 6 months. Pull the choke, giver a half dozen pumps on the gas pedal and off she goes. Both the 77 and 86, same way save for...

    Lost ignition!

If you’re gonna replace it anyways just break it and then you can drive it. Screwdriver, pretend you’re a car thief. Or find come sketchy mfer to help you with it. Or hit up some little repair shops, junkyards someone with a bunch of old Chebbies in their field, likely find a key that works...

    Tripod mirrors on lowered trucks?

I’ll be keepin the tow mirrors on the BIG10 even after it’s lowered and when I paint it. But I’m just weird like that. I do wish the K20 had the tripod towing mirrors and the c10 had the dumbos, but whatever….its how they came from the factory. I also think it makes a difference what the truck...

Great perspective and a consensus has been achieved. On a different note, how good of shape is it in? RCSB trucks are going up in value.

C20 - Trailering vs. Camper Special

If you can’t actually figure it out, it kinda doesn’t matter. It either has the heavy gvw brakes and springs or the regular, but realistically it’ll haul the same weight and how well it will tow depends about solely on the gears given a stock 350.

C20 - Trailering vs. Camper Special

Sweet setup dude! My BIG10 carried a truck camper its whole life. Until I bought it. I need to get a picture of it with the camper on it from him. Tough little trucks! I bet trailering special is probably just deeper gears and what used to be rare, factory trailer hitch and lights. Woukda been...

Crazy. Same spelling is kinda rare too. lol. My family settled in Indiana off the boat and made their way to Illinois.

    2001 Silverado advice

Similar to @Girth experience with GMT800s, I hold them pretty high up in the bulletproof category. Never had one when they were “new”. Never was around them much as the Company ran all Fords in that era. Bought the first one as a beater winter commuter for the wife. (It wasn’t a beater, it was...

What did you pay for a square

I never said what I paid for either square afaik, as I believe that’s generally a persons own business only. But can see the value in it for like minded folks who are analyzing what I said in my post above. (Out of touch sellers). So, details of the 2 trucks I have are all over this forum, but...

What did you pay for a square

Ha, this old post just popped up. For the record, this truck above is not the one I bought. What are the odds, 2 of the same color basically same condition Big10s for sale in the same region about the same time? Regarding prices for these trucks, or could be said about older or classic...

    2001 Silverado advice

Always a tough call when faced with spending more fixing a vehicle than it will be worth even after the repairs. And besides the engine, a 300k mile 4L60 is a time bomb. IMO, if you can do the junkyard option, (assuming you can’t just slap head gaskets in it) that seems to be the only option...

^ I don’t think you’re giving yourself enough credit…sounds like you worked hard and never lost sight of getting your grandpas truck back, despite it disappearing when it shouldn’t have.

    3M Tape on cab moldings

I think the back piece cab molding would work if using the plastic clips. The corner pieces need to be drilled and fastened with the nut though. Plus if the tape fails it won’t fall off as it’s also retained by the corner pieces. Idk about the small 70s tailgate band. Depends how much surface...

after doin front end clutch and steering column, truck feels like its in 4wd

The steering binding of being in 4wd on dry pavement is the same 4hi or low. IMO a hanging brake does not feel the same but is easy to diagnose. It’s the wheel(s) that get too hot and cause it to pull on way or other. I think your problems, symptoms and solutions are mutually exclusive. And...

    Dual Tanks Fuel switch delete

Good point. I assumed they’d pull somewhat the same until maybe low fuel level. Which brings out the other workaround of connecting both tanks on the bottom to equalize. That definitively works. Just difficult to execute as a safe and long term solution.

    Dual Tanks Fuel switch delete

No return line(s) that will work. 3 port sender and return line fuel pump, that will not work.

    Whatcha do with that...?

THIS makes sense. Shcitty reman alternators and starters are a real thing. Given the opportunity I’d have an original starter or alt rebuilt.

    Whatcha do with that...?

Depends how much room and stomach you have for old parts laying around imo. Everyone has a different plan, outlook, situation. For example, @bucket has like 17 cars, half of them squarebody and has a farm/barns/outbuildings and it’s his “thing” to have an array of cool old Chevys. He has the...

    350 or LS

Budget and capability of the folks doing the work is key. As is how many miles you plan on putting on it. From my point of view, LS swap for a few reasons. 1 fuel mileage if you plan on alot of miles and going as far as swapping in an OD trans. 2 fun factor. You’ll spend as much or more from my...
