POS shell! But it didnt fail...Have to look elsewhere...Rear gear train failure mimicks/replicates the symptoms of sun shell failure, the loss of rev, 2nd and 4th...
Man, what a mess.
Technically, you dont adjust rear end play in the 700R4s or 4L60Es as everything is free to thrust against the pump. But excessive front end play can also indirectly cause this sort of failure...Excessive play results in the forward drum thrust bearing being hammered by the stator as the parts...
Monster Transmission, LOL!!!
All the monster transmissions I have torn down (mostly 4L60Es and a few 4L80Es) all looked basically stock inside, including stock frictions, basic shift kits or mods and nothing overly innovative; same is true for their OTC 'Monster in the Box' kits...You can buy...
You can simply remove the governor from the transmission and do your mods to it with the kit on the bench; no need to remove the trans. The governor can be accessed at the rear of the transmission. Simply remove the governor cover retainer clip, if one is installed then take a smooth, flat blade...
What is a "4700"?
No 700R4 came from the factory without a converter clutch however you can convert to a non-locking converter using transgo's Non-lock up conversion kit.
You likely have a standard governor causing shift points to be later when a diesel governor would be more appropriate for the diesel given their torque curve vs a 350 gas engine's.
You can pick up a Superior Tech governor kit to modify it so it shifts a bit earlier so it doesnt wind up the...
Fun Fact: Chrysler was nearly bankrupt for large portions of the 80s and early 90s and didn't get around to developing overdrive transmissions until nearly a decade after GM and Ford. When they did, they leveraged their A345 design from the mid-70s, which was a an optional extension assembly...
Yep, avoid 82-E84 700R4s or convert them to L84-87 standard (30-spline shaft, newer design "152" drum and 29 element sprag. Top it all off with a factory 10-vane rotor/slide kit and it's good to go for most applications.
Glad you were able to get it fixed! That said, it wont be the problem here as the 700R4 doesnt use a vacuum modulator. The modulator system for managing line pressure and p/t shifting was replaced with the throttle valve system for the same purposes in the 700R4.
No towing in OD if you can avoid it...trans coolers are always recommended, esp in heavy duty applications like towing/hauling.
There's a few other things Id do to the transmission specifically for towing, let me know if you need a quick list of them.
Main thing you need to know with the...
Agreed - ive rebuild several Monsters and they leave a lot to be desired...I also provide a brand new detent cable with all my 700R4s and 200-4R builds to eliminate the stretched/worn cable scenario as it is common for them to not hold or simply snap.
Even when the customer burns up the 3-4...
What do you mean by "no going back"?
Internal dual feeding involves simply tapping the high reverse feed passage in the case for a 3/8x16 or 3/8x24 set screw then installing the set screw, leaving the high drum's center seal out and middle large stator sealing ring. All of that is reversible...
Yep, minimal mods to get TH400s to survive/thrive in high HP, high rom applications. Ill retro a 97+ 4L80E direct drum in to L71+ TH400s that come with that stupid intermediate roller clutch so i can run the BW 34-element sprag instead. Can run a full 4L80E int piston and clutch pack as well if...
You're welcome, @Sgt Gus!
Keep an eye on it, note that if your shifts start becoming late and real harsh, that could be a sign of high line pressure, which is common in these units as they wear/age...A pressure test can quickly rule that in or out.
Relatively normal for TH400s - some are more abrupt than others...My guess is that both forward and direct drums in yours have no cushion plates installed (the direct clutch is also used in reverse) and the center lip seal in the forward drum has either been omitted during a prev rebuild or left...
You're welcome
Potential causes:
- Poorly set up and/or misassembled 3-4 clutch
- Leaking 2-3 accumulator check ball capsule (rare)
- Turbine shaft sealing ring (2nd from bottom, bottom ring or both) pinched upon installation of the pump assembly into the case
- Worn, non-servicable pump...
Having a contingent of racing customers is always good for business and if you build trust w/them, do right, etc they won't ever go anywhere else...
I never install the shift kits as you can do pretty much everything the B&M kits call for independently, and largely same for the Transgo stuff as...
The 3-4 pack is smoked...Drop the pan to confirm but it will need to go back to the shop for rework. Once you get it back and installed, you must perform a pressure test to validate your TV cable set up and adjustment are good to go...I give all my 700R4 and 200-4R customers detailed...
