LOL, I live in the desert on top of a mountain, we dont get mud even when it rains. I am just exploring options, as we are moving back east to Appalachia in the fall, and the paint is chipped in several places. I want to avoid rust issues down the road.

For about the same cost in materials and prep you could do a single stage 2K urethane paint job with generic or Summit brand products. Paint won’t hide any existing flaws is the biggest difference, it also takes a little more thought before you start spraying.

This is what I have been doing with my K20; overall, I am satisfied with the results but I do question the amount of effort to get here. These trucks have a lot of surface area which takes an enormous amount of time to prepare properly especially if it had many previous coatings from the past 40 years. I did use some bed liner and single coat paint along the bottom of the body, mostly because it was a lot more work to perfect these areas as well and they will see the most rock chip damage. The path chosen for me was based on truck existing conditions, non originality, budget and storage. It didn’t make sense to spend a lot of money and time for high dollar paint when it will still live outside and it’s a Frankenstein. I am really looking forward to be done with body and paint on my 20 footer. It’s been a fun project and has rekindled a lot of old memories from the past.

I’ve seen a few factory trucks (don’t recall the brand) where they used a bed liner-looking paint to protect the rocker panels. Not sure what it was called, and I haven’t seen it used in quite a while.

My son used a product on my Chevy II that was called Shootz on the rockers....I think? Kind of rubberized looking and feeling. Went on clear and he painted right over it. It has been on the car for 28 years and no chipping or peeling........YMMV
