Exhaust Question

I just purchased a 1985K 10 all original, with the 305 engine. There is a hole in the back of the muffler. I’m contemplating either getting a new muffler or changing the single exhaust system to a dual exhaust system. What do you guys think?

You probably won’t notice much difference on a stock engine going to dual. Other than sound. A new quality muffler would probably be the best choice at this time, and least amount of money to get done.

Ok thanks, you read my mind because that’s what I was thinking, would it make a big difference with the 305? Definitely cheaper to just replace the muffler… Do you have any suggestions of what muffler to go with? I’d like to have it a little louder than stock, but nothing too crazy.

I’ve always been a fan of flow masters but I haven’t bought anything in a good bit. The last time I did I happened to get the last set of original super 40s for my k5. But that was 20 years ago…

My c10 currently has thrush I believe on it and it’s got a rumble when in the throttle but fairly quiet at idle. I would just do some YouTube searches for mufflers or see what some of these other guys may suggest.

Yeah seems like a lot of people like the Flowmaster 40 series. Thanks for the info

I have true duals in my 78, and have had duals in a couple other trucks. At this stage in life, I would just replace the muffler and be done. I’ve primarily had flowmasters, but I would look at thrush, and magnaflow as well.

Jumping on this thread....so got a carbed 350, need exhaust.....single or dual?
has stock manifolds....
is there any benefit to dual
My thought is 2.25 duals, dual cats dual mufflers.....? would appreciate thoughts/experiences

$30 vs $300-1000+ for new dual system. Which one fits your wallet and usage of the truck? That is the deciding factor.
It’ll sound better with nice duals. It will not be any faster or have more power. Being anemic on power is another discussion.

Not enough power to flex the sound of 40s imo. Will just still be slow and sound like the exhaust fell off.
I believe cars shouldn’t be any louder than they are fast or powerful.
A loud ass fart can on a 4cyl Hyundai is an example of what not to do imo.

that helps. just a stock driver. might go single 2.25 and call it good. my son is pushing me for headers and duals....but I am just going to cruise in it. It had a inline 250 cyl for 40+ years....

If you want a nice mellow, straight-through muffler, take a look at Magnaflow. I have them with duals and an H-pipe and it has strong V8 sound without being excessively loud. Flowmasters are also a common choice, but I'm not really crazy about the tone and/or the drone at certain speeds.

If you are considering switching to duals I would just get a price from a local exhaust place. I did it myself in the driveway with the truck on ramps, and its mostly a PIA unless you like working flat on your back with rust and dirt falling on you. The cost also adds up when you buy a complete exhaust, add in 2 mufflers, and then make several trips to the store to get hangars and other odds and ends.

Also take a look at the store brand mufflers from Summit and Jegs. Many of them are just rebranded from mainstream companies, but you aren't paying for the name brand.

I am debating on keeping a single exhaust or going to duals....hard to spend the money just for sound if no mechanical benefits

What would a 19 year old @Ken B say to you if he had the chance? Save a few bucks or go buckwild…

Dual 2.25” & a set of turbo mufflers sure do make a stock small block sound good
