You can tell by the overspray on the eyelets of the leaf springs and the large area missed on the axle tube of the rear end that it's aftermarket paint/undercoat. Doesn't take away that it's a nice truck but would definitely wanna see it in person, like you said, to ensure that it's not trying to cover up an issue(s).

I only looked at a couple of the pictures, but it looks to me like the undercoat was applied with the intent to only cover the sheetmetal. What I glanced at looks to be an original frame coating, with frame rivets still in bare steel. The rear axle and springs look like untouched original to me. The bare spot on the axle probably didn't used to be there.

Have you ever thought that maybe he wanted a better ride, or to be able to haul motocross bikes or 4'x8' sheets with the tail gate shut?
Or possibly wanted a truck to actually be used for work.
