700r4 tv cable adjustment

I have a 1983 k2500 with a 700r4. I had the tranny rebuilt by a local shop and when driving away something seemed off with the shifting. Took it back and they put a new tv cable on it. Pick it back up and something again seems like it’s not right. It shifts into second about 10mph but all other gears after that feel normal. They double checked the cable and said everything is adjusted correctly but I just don’t feel right about it. They drove it and said it’s operating normally. It’s a reputable shop that I know a lot of people have gone to and is trusted but something is just off I feel. Can anyone look at this cable and offer any advice? I feel the cable should be tighter but looks like they also have the ratcheting option adjusted all the way tight

You need gauges to check adjustment. A lot of people use the set it too tight step on the pedal and it's adjusted method then tighten or loosen it a little to adjust shift points. I don't trust it.

I’m just really worried about burning up the tranny especially shifting that quick out of 1st. The other gears seem to shift at the correct points. I don’t have a gauge to measure the line pressure just didn’t know if I should be worried about how fast it shifts out of 1st

I use gauges because I don't want to burn up transmissions. Make sure you get a warranty,let the shop adjust it and leave it alone. You don't want them to void your warranty because you disagree with their setup.

Yeah that’s what I have been telling myself it just is a bummer to not feel comfortable driving it because of how it shifts it’s almost more annoying than anything from what I’m used to

As long as it goes into each gear with a solid thud (no slipping/sliding greasy, slide into gear) shifting too early won’t really hurt anything.

There are probably hundreds of different spring/valves/govenor combinations HydraMatic used to get the shift points right for each application. That’s sometimes an issue with transplanted transmission swaps, if the donor trans came from a completely different application, it might shift less than desirable.

TransGo offers a calibration kit that includes different springs to help tailor shift points. Transgo Jr 700 I think is the part number.

I stand corrected, it’s called the TransGo system correction kit. It’s pretty involved, but they do work. I had to use one when I put the 700 in my truck, the cop car transmission core I used didn’t work very well when I first installed it.

I stand corrected, it’s called the TransGo system correction kit. It’s pretty involved, but they do work. I had to use one when I put the 700 in my truck, the cop car transmission core I used didn’t work very well when I first installed it.

I used that kit once, took seemingly forever to get it all installed, lol. IIRC it used to be called the "SK700-SR". I typically install the JR kit and do other things to the VB as needed/required...

I don’t have a gauge to measure the line pressure just didn’t know if I should be worried about how fast it shifts out of 1st
Gauges are cheap, smoked transmissions due to TV cable issues are not...Amazon has combo transmission pressure gauge and oil pressure gauge sets available; they can be shipped overnight if you're a Prime member.

If you own a vehicle with a TV-based transmission installed, a trans pressure gauge is a must-have for your tool kit.

1 and 1/4 to 1/2 inch measured from the front of the throttle should set it near perfect and the cable will not be tight

Ff your TV cable is set correctly as per the guys that did the reco on the trans, then the next place to explore a said by Matt69OLDs is the govenor , had exactly same issue as you have , rebuilt trans shift points are different etc etc. Changing the springs and weights is relatively easy but fiddly and time consuming even if you do have a lift at home . The Kit has a chart with it as a guide but every trans is different. If possible go back to the trans shop and ask them to either fit your old govenor in your trans or get them to set up the new govenor for you . I presume if something goes wrong and you have played with the govenor springs they may walk away from any warranty.
