If you can get a measure on the minor diameter of the hole that would be a good start.

Now, the hole could have been altered before for some reason (say drilled larger than it should be for the given thread, but here are the minor diameters of various threads:

7/16-14 .360-.376
7/16-20 .383-.395
1/2-13 .417-.434
1/2-20 .446-.457
M12x1.75 .4016
M12x1.25 .4252
M14x2 .4724
M14x1.5 4921

A measurement would at least narrow it down to a few choices.

If you have a Lowe’s hardware or other place that sells Irwin Hansen, should be ~$7 each for a standard and metric pitch gauge set.

Made in the USA too. Irwin Hansen also makes them for Snap-On.

I think I'd make a threaded bushing and call it a day. I'd start with a brass pipe reducer in closest to correct O.D. file a notch on one side to collect chips cross thread it in. The cast iron Wil cut new threads in the brass. Tap the I.D something common.

Apologies, came across this late. Been wrapped up in prepping and eating WAY TOO MUCH turkey and fixins.
The parts manual (pics attached) says for an 87, part number 56, the bolt that holds the dipstick tube to the block is a 5/16-18 x 1/2". Hope this helps.

Interesting, I sure appreciate your info.
But this is definitely a two piece dip stick. Lower bolt or stud is huge.
I also just realized :pp: this may be a replacement 1990 block based on casting and serial#. Casting is 10069286, serial#TE19XXZ0. :rolleyes:

Does anyone currently have a big block with the dipstick actually bolted to the block? If so, pics?

I've been running 454's since the late 80's (all Mark IV blocks) and I've never had a dipstick that attached to the block. I've used various aftermarket and OE dipsticks and the mounting tab on the tube always goes to an exhaust bolt. My current motor has a late 80's block with a longer "T" handled OE dipstick and it's attached to a header bolt.

I'm not saying the block bolt type doesn't exist, just that I've handled a few 454's, both in trucks and loose engines, and I've never run across a mounting tab on the block.

Yes, this one has the upper portion mt to exhaust stud like that also. It's fine without the lower mt. Just got me curious. See my post 7 & 8 if you want. We'll move on without.
I also saw a 90-91 I think that had the knock sensor there. Our 87 doesn't use one.
I've been meaning to email gm with casting and serial# early on to see if any records.

Yes, casting says it's a special over the counter replacement block. The serial # should start with CE, not TE, but no definitive info...thus I'll send a $50 email to satisfy my curiosity, maybe.
