I use a bit of PTFE paste but that is from decades of working with stainless steel. Use it sparingly and it will be ok.

As @DoubleDingo already pointed out,they are NPT which means they taper and the more you tighten it,the more wedged it becomes. NPT...

Technically you shouldn't need any thread sealer as the fittings flare out/taper out. So the tighter they get, the wider the threaded...

Problem shows up when a guy wraps the bejeezus out of the sending unit with tape. A dab'll do ya.

I've always used Teflon. I prefer the paste over the tape.
