What have you done to your square lately??

Got finished mounting up the pipes and cut out the old exhaust. Ordered some flex pipe and a buncha clamps and reducers to hook it up. Found out exhaust flex pipe won’t bend tight enough to get from point A to point B, so have to take it in to a shop and get a couple pieces made from the...

Engine Stalling - Bad EVAP/Charcoal Canister?

Don’t worry about crazy dude. You have a lot of good intel to share here.

Engine Stalling - Bad EVAP/Charcoal Canister?

That’s not a problem. You weren’t too long winded. The internet doesn’t always answer your questions immediately. But @Ricko1966 did. If it’s a vent problem, no gas cap will diagnose that issue. Which you may have already diagnosed by cutting the vent line again. Another question? Why the...

    Intake plenum gaskets

Because many of us here aren’t even mechanics by trade but are mechanically inclined. Helps that everyone here has some connection to 70s-80s GM vehicles. And at some point I bet all of us got hornsshwaggled by a “mechanic.” And like you either out of necessity or frustration said “fck it. I’ll...

    1983 Chevy K10 Cab Search

No probably about the road salt part. Even over in Spokane and the mountains east of Spokane, they get the same or even way more snow. Just a different environment and less salts used. There’s a little more rust over there than on the coast here, but nothing compared to rust belt of the US of A...

    1983 Chevy K10 Cab Search

Thanks! It actually received a 454 transplant probably 25 years ago. And a new motor 15-20 years ago. Best guess talking with the last guy who owned it for any length of time, he put that motor in and it may have 20-40k miles total on it. That motor will pair up nicely with your 83! You...

Do I need an electric fuel pump!

Doesn’t need an electric fuel pump. But not normal for sitting a few days or weeks or months. Needs a little carb work sounds like.

So it runs good enough to pull a horse trailer down the highway? Seems only problem then is the priming issue?

    12v ignition switch source

Yup on all accounts. My truck will start and run for about 30sec with the hidden switch off. Then it dies. Suddenly It aint got no gas in it!

    12v ignition switch source

Yes when the engine is running. No when the key is on but engine not running. The relay I mentioned you don’t need. Your car already has that safety feature if you will. But for vehicles that don’t have efi supporting electronics… It primes the system for a couple seconds when the key is...

    Stock rim width

If they’re GM 8 lug aluminum 8x6.5 then they are most likely the PYO wheels. Since you didn’t specify width. Those are 6.5 wide. 285-75s work but are balloons. 285-65s are pushing it imo.

    12v ignition switch source

Mine (86 with a newer engine and electric fuel pump) was run from the electric choke wire…eek when I bought it.) I kept the choke wire as the trigger for a relay. However you don’t want just a simple relay (long term anyway) as that will put power to the fuel pump 100% of the time when the key...

    Intake plenum gaskets

Ok separate the issues. 1. Pumping the throttle 80x to start is 90% likely carburetor related. Accelerator pump worn out. It’s the little plunger thingy under the top lever. Not difficult. (I am also NOT an expert on Q jet carbs so anyone feel free to correct me. Just trying to be helpful.)...

Thank you! Well this one hasn’t auto resetteded itself in a month so I’ll take that as a sign I still need to remove the motor and regulator….fccck.

Sounds like @Catbox kid could have a side job here. Pretty sure Maxwellvis knows more about Chebbie motors than this persons parts replacer. Seriously. @yellowdog5 if youre anywhere within range of Portland this guys kid can fix your minor issues.

    Intake plenum gaskets

In keeping with the original question while you get help diagnosing the actual issue(s) which sound 90% carb related, it does not sound like your intake manifold gasket(s) are the problem. If it was leaking oil out the front or back, eating coolant or had a vacuum leak (this one is still...

Seems odd that H2 wheels with relatively skinny tires would rub at all.

Engine cranks, but only starts after letting off key? - I'm perplexed

Did they put a whole new distributor in it or just a cap n rotor or? Sometimes it’s the oddest thing. That’s why electrical gremlins are called gremlins. For instance son’s mustang was throwing cam sensor codes and running poorly. New cam sensors didn’t fix it. It was alternator diodes causing...

What have you done to your square lately??

Not sure if you were replying to me as I posted, maybe in this thread, about needing a window motor. On the 77 Is this the case on the 70s window motors? Reason I asked is the PO (I just bought the truck) was surprised the drivers window didn’t work. Said it always worked (for the few years he’s...

Engine cranks, but only starts after letting off key? - I'm perplexed

Even though you have a “modern” squarebody, lol, it’s still going to me more subject to experienced diagnosis rather than most shops/mechanics now who are frequently only having to do computer diagnostics and replace parts. Idk how old school your shop is, but finding someone who is experienced...

Engine cranks, but only starts after letting off key? - I'm perplexed

Now leaning towards maybe something heat soak related under the hood. IGN module or even coil. Coil windings expand as they heat up. Could need just slightly more power when warm/hot to do coil things and it gets that power as the draw is released from the starter motor. Don’t recall, if you...
